One of the teen films that defined the 90s... I think it's quite good as far as modernizations of classic texts typically go... Share your thoughts? Oh, and good luck getting that The Verve song out of your head.

Watched it during a flight... maybe I'm not fair towards it or maybe it's really not good... a generous 4/10. *I really liked SMG though, and this ending alone is unforgettable:

Haven't seen it in ages but I remember liking it for what it is and developing a crush on Sarah Michelle Gellar.

In the old days before Pornhub, you had to rely on MTV or movies like this to spank it to.

I was obsessed with it in my teens - many situations I wanted to be part of, lots of wishes conceived, etc... - , I used to listen to the soundtrack all the time and claim it my favourite movie ever for a long time. iirc was my first blu-ray in my collection. Last time I saw it a couple of years ago and thought it holds up prety well, a nice glimpse to a place in time, there's actually scenes where the dialogue is the same, word from word, from the Frears's adaptation. Sarah Michelle Gellar is quite great and Ryan Phillipe was so beautiful back then. racist selma can get lost.

Glenn Close vs. Sarah Michelle Gellar -- That's my baby. I am as biased for her as you are for the other one. John Malkovich vs. Ryan Phillippe Michelle Pfeiffer vs. Reese Witherspoon

ibbi - I know I'm one of only a handful of users here who likes Glenn Close, but I'm definitely not biased when it comes to her or her performances. For instance... of her 8 Oscar nominations, I'd say she only deserved half of them: The World According to Garp, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, and The Wife. So check that. You sinister imp.

Glenn Close - Sarah Michelle Gellar. But the teen idol puts on a fight, it's close
John Malkovich - Ryan Phillipe. All the way, that's an against type casting and serves the movie, Ryan is just a beautiful walking sculpture
Michelle Pfeiffer - Reese Witherspoon. I like Reese's character the better (she wins!!!) but I'm partial to La Pfeiffer in costume dramas (that was her oscar!!)
Uma Thurman - Selma Blair. Not crazy about any of them but Selma because she was almost 30 and looked the part.

avnermoriarti - You are in good company! Niels Schneider, young French actor, lover of Virginie Efira, and soon to be seen Stateside in Woody Allen's Coup de chance ( pacinoyes Mattsby) says this is the film he has watched the most ( ibbi theycallmemrfish - I'm assuming you guys understand why...)

I also share with him the "feel good" movie TylerDeneuve Have you seen An Impossible Love (2018) ? I don't know if Virginie and Niels met there but it is a great french expansive, maybe a little too ambitious, period drama that goes from late 50s to early 00s irrc and both are really good in it.
