One of our greatest living character actors, up for a Best Actor Oscar tommorow for his performance in The Holdovers. I'm mixing in his TV and Film work, as he's done a breadth of great work across both mediums.

I thought he was pretty tremendous as Harvey Pekar in American Splendor

* I've talked about Paul a lot in how he was underrated a bit at one time....... and then championed so much as underrated he became overrated imo... * I don't think he is one of the world's greatest character actors myself and I also think some of his most acclaimed work is overrated too - specifically John Adams (swept the awards, I think he was amateurish ) and Cinderella Man where, to me, he's doing a bad Wallace Beery impersonation........he's also overrated and samey in Win Win (Payne, light) and Barney's Version But he certainly can be great though....... and has been REALLY great in Sideways, American Splenor, THe Holdovers which is his best........his performances don't have a lot of range but when he's on he can be memorable........he's also perfect in the first half of Cold Souls .....before the movie falls apart...... Cold Souls is Paul at his MOST Paul...... Very much like a schlubby, lesser Kevin Spacey with similar range issues........ With Papa - Yale President and baseball commissioner - the late Bart Giamatti - the guy who banned Pete Rose .........ah the smell of wealth.......that's a little pre-schlubby Paul at the bottom:

It obviously has the advantage of screentime, but it's John Adams, which rated for me as the best presidential performance until Day-Lewis's Lincoln.

It’s close between Sideways and The Holdovers because they’re similar in a lot of ways, but I have to go with the former. His monologue sitting on the porch with Madsen and the scene where he bumps into his ex-wife at the wedding (and sadly has to smile through what she tells him) are just two examples of how great that performance is.

John Adams is his best work. It's Laura Linney's best too.

Ah, i didn't know he came from rich family.
That doesn't detract from his actual talent.
Anyway, i'm disappointed Barney's Version is not here, because it's truly his greatest performance.

Ah, i didn't know he came from rich family. That doesn't detract from his actual talent. Daniel Day-Lewis comes from a wealthy family. His father Cecil was the Poet Laureate of England. He was a prolific novelist as well as a poet and accumalated a lot of wealth through his published work. That's just one example. A. lot of great actors come from wealth and money. It's a profession that can be difficult to get a break in if you can't afford to support yourself while looking for a break, which is why a lot of children of wealthy parents are able to succeed in acting. They never have to worry about how they'll pay the rent on some shitty apartment while auditioning and looking for their break. Rich kid actors are very common. You have great ones and mediocre ones, like in every profession. So yes, coming from money in no way detracts from Giamatti's talent than it does for DDL or Rooney Mara ( who comes from an insanely rich family. Like she is literally an heir to billions of dollars).

Ah, i didn't know he came from rich family. That doesn't detract from his actual talent. Of course not ^ but Giamatti gets a lot of "he's so underrated" praise for other things that don't add to his talent either - .................there is always, ALWAYS a group of people who vote for actors who are less physically attractive ("the Robert Duvall Effect" I call it)....with the implication being "if Paul Giamatti looked like Robert Redford..............blah blah blah"........... There was a Paul Giamatti vs. Jeffrey Wright thread a little while ago..........and Paul Giamatti is clearly a lesser actor to Jeffrey Wright for example no matter his wealth.........or looks................

John Adams. He was incredible in that miniseries. Richly deserved Emmy. One of my favorite scenes from that: “Now your immediate resignations would be accepted gentlemen!”

Another reason why Sideways is the slightly more impressive performance to me is that I think the role is less predefined whereas in The Holdovers he’s playing more of a “type.” It’s a very well-written type that’s wonderfully shaded through his performance, but it’s still the sort of thing where you can imagine how it’ll be played by reading the screenplay. While the character in Sideways is similar, it feels to me more open for the actor to fill in the role and play in different ways.

The Holdovers, although The Illusionist is a very underrated turn from him, I'd have given him a supporting nod. The best thing about that movie.

The Holdovers. Every bit of his performance he does something to make the character so memorable. While I am bummed he didn't win, I hope he gets his due soon.
