Right up with Pacino's comeback after Revolution - um ............right up there with the one Jonathan Majors will never have............right up there with the one Nate Parker will never have either.............it would be like Trump becoming the Republican nominee in 2024 and then........right........ nevermind............going too far again pacinoyes....... anyhoo.......serving jail time in 1998 where he was known as Roberta Downey (kidding, but.....)......to an Oscar nod for his gloriously offensive to dumbfucks turn in Tropic Thunder (better than Chaplin, yeah I said it)................. to the biggest box office star in the world..........to an Oscar as the vlllain in a Box Office / Critical juggernault.......heck just his April 2024 looks amazing with his Peter Sellers like multiple role in The Sympathizer What are some others? They've seen good times........they've seen baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad times........

It's hard to find a bigger example than Downey, Jr., who went from being uninsurable to being the biggest Hollywood earner in the span of a decade.
Ben Affleck went from being a tabloid joke in the early 2000s who everyone derided as riding his buddy Matt's coattails to an Oscar win for Original Screenplay, to earning his second Oscar and becoming an A-list director.

He's a good actor and extremely likeable. I am still upset he screwed up Ally McBeal though. Haha.

Nobody had a bigger turnaround than RDJ but last Oscar season we had Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan who are pretty extraordinary comeback stories.

He was literally down and out.

He was literally down and out. He literally says "nobody had a bigger turnaround than RDJ." Right now it's just trying to figure out who's second place. Fraser's a really good pick here. Quan's story was great but Fraser won off the (hump)back of his comeback narrative.

His "comeback" really shows how forgiving people are ... as long as you are a white man. You don't even have to be super hot or undeniably talented, just being white and has a penis attached on you is enough. Lol.

His whole comeback is predicated on his undeniable talent. Unless you think he's dogshit in both Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, it's hard to deny the talent

He was in dog house for a very long time and was written off. He got lucky Jon was able to convince studio he was Iron Man.

John Travolta..... Saturday Night Live to Blow Out is a heck of a 5 year run
but everything he did from '82-'93 is enough to send him to the halls of obscurity..... all badly reviewed films rated 5.9 or below on IMDB. The guy that rescued him is Quentin Tarantino. Then he went on to have a pretty good 90s career. His face was seen everywhere in the 90s, for someone who had fallen off in the 80s. Face/Off is one of mom's movies. She became a Cage fan after that movie.
He simply did so many movies in the late 90s that it's hard to avoid seeing him even tho you can argue Pulp Fiction and Face/Off were his only major movies but many of the others were pretty popular tho maybe not nowadays. Then he did Battlefield Earth.
Marlon Brando... needs no explanation
But my favorite comeback of all time in pop culture history is none other than Dr Dre... ......

He actually had two comebacks within 5 years - Look Who's Talking (1989) was at first seen as a comeback ........then people decided Nah, doesn't count.................. it wasn't and then he had to make a comeback from his comeback........

Travolta is a good one especially since he scored Oscar nod with an iconic role. QT bailed him out again but alas it didn't stick.

plastic surgery disaster victim Mickey Rourke comes to mind with The Wrestler. Fantastic choice that I totally forgot. Tho I think he was already beginning his comeback with Sin City, but The Wrestler was Mickey Rourke actually making a valiant attempt to get back into the game. He showed up to the Oscars.... and looked kinda ok - something I wouldn't expect from his IDGAF persona, and once again Sean Penn ruins a cult hero's chance to win an Oscar. Bill Murray was the first of the cult heroes. He was pretty popular from '82-'87, but..... like his character in The Wrestler claims..... "90s sucked"

The interesting thing with Rourke's "The Wrestler" comeback is that before his supposed comeback, he was actually getting small but memorable parts in lots of films ("The Pledge", "Animal Factory", "BUffalo 66", "The Rainmaker") and had major supporting roles in Robert Rodriguez and Tony Scott films, as well as some cult favorites like "Spun" and "Thursday". Ever since "The Wrestler", he hardly had a role worthy of his talents.

I guess Rusty Cohle is too obvious a shoutout and everyone's above that here? And I don't know if anyone else caught the "Vito awards" yesterday but Josh Hartnett might be good to keep an eye on...

Unless you think he's dogshit in both Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, it's hard to deny the talent I hate everything about the Marvel universe so I naturally can't stand Iron Man. I am also not referring to him specifically as much as I am referring to the fact that actresses almost never have a "comeback" after controversies. Actually they can be as controversy-free as it gets and still never see a comeback at 40+.

Sandra Bullock anyone? Unless you were living under a rock, Sandra Bullock in the 90s was everywhere. From Demolition Man thru Miss Congeniality..... '93-'02.... a 10 year run littered with some of the most popular cable fare there is. Her mom's favorite actress reputation was born there. But..... she went off the map for a long time. Sure she was in Crash, but like anyone remembers her. The Lake House, Infamous, and Premonition are simply movies that existed, but were heavily overshadowed by more popular films of the year. But then that behemoth 2009 year...... was unexpected and came out of nowhere. It was an actress I thought had gone the Jeanne Tripplehorn way, no longer America's Sweetheart anymore, buried and faded. But....obviously not. We all know how big The Blind Side was. And The Proposal was a box office hit, a top 10 all-time grossing romantic comedy. And it was this point that firmly established her as one of America's most beloved actresses, a title shared only by 4 or 5 other people. I prefer Mirren and Mulligan from the '09 lineup, but I don't really bash Bullock's win. It was a career award for Hollywood domination. And I thought she was better than the other 2 nominees for sure. Go Sandy! And dang did she look good on Oscar night.

Actually they can be as controversy-free as it gets and still never see a comeback at 40+. Ingrid Bergman and Winona Ryder both came back after controversies. I would say the 40+ rule has less to do with controversies and more to do with the limited roles for women past a certain age.

If it was then Mickey Rourke's comeback would have lasted longer than 2 years. A lot of people needed to help Downey, but he also had to hold up his own end. He also is actually pretty talented!
