I have taked (too much) about - surprisngly - one of my favorite records of the year The Umbrelllas - Fairweather Friend (2024)........an album of real interesting male / female vocals sometimes alone, sometimes together, sometimes alternating. What are some of your favorites just for the way they are sung? Just a few off the top of my head: Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (1968) - A masterpiece of an album, with angelic, demonic possessed vocals.....I know some people on MAR don't get it....but tbh I don't really get you ........... The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (1971) - Rock's greatest frontman sings the shit out of this album in an amazing array of styles - Rock, Country, Folk, Gospel, Blues........ The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols (1977)- Like a great actor "acting" out the songs... The Kinks - Arthur (1969) - A Sex Pistols for it's day .......... in theatricality at least The Pandoras - Stop Pretending (1986) - A tour de force of female attitide from the late - and on this record anyway - great Paula Pierce The Stooges - Fun House (1970) - More animal than man really Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out (1997) - I love those alternating "hiccup" vocals........it became their signature style but here is where they perfected it Dry Cleaning - Stumpwork (2022) - The dryest and often funniest spoken word delivery from Florence Shaw

You'll throw your shoe at me, but Bowie's vocals are majestic in Lodger and Scary Monsters.

You'll throw your shoe at me, but Bowie's vocals are majestic in Lodger and Scary Monsters. I do think "It's No Game (No. 1)" is one of his wildest, scariest vocal performance - Black Francis takes a lot from that song imo .......... and "Ashes to Ashes" is my favorite Bowie song .........that's a tremendous vocal definitely........

Some obvious ones: Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Big Brother and the Holding Company - Cheap ThrillsPersonal faves: The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds – I mean come on, is there an album that is more lavish in its layering of vocal harmonies and counterpoint? The Beatles - Abbey Road – I’m sure everyone has a different answer for what Beatles album has the best vocals overall, but this is it for me. From Paul belting the shit out of “Oh! Darling” to John’s anguished vocals on “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” to the sublime harmonies on “Because”... *chef’s kiss* Metallica - ...And Justice for All – Along with Puppets, this is Hetfield at his peak. By this point, he had really grown into his low range, and there is a darkness and meanness to his voice here that he never really achieved before or again later. System of a Down – Toxicity - Serj Tankian’s vocal style is so batshit in its range and personality, there is no one else in metal (or anywhere) who sounds like him. “Chop Suey!” alone is awe-inspiring in how much he does there: on top of the haunting melodic stuff, you’ve got the manic whisper-scream verses, which require an insane level of breath control and precise diction. And then elsewhere he does these tongue-twisting patterns like bizarre rap, guttural and scary growls, deliberate voice cracking... dude is a force of nature. Alice in Chains – Dirt - Layne Staley is a big reason why AiC are my favorite of those Seattle guys. I’m not usually into nasal singing, but he somehow managed to do it in a wonderfully dynamic way, with some of my favorite vibrato of any rock singer. I also love how his voice blended with Cantrell’s... they were an incredible duet. Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion II – “Civil War” pretty much covers all of Axl’s vocal range in one song... and that’s just the opening track ffs. You’ve also got powerhouses like “Yesterdays,” “Knockin' on Heaven's Door,” “Estranged” (those vocal scoops!), the awesome multitracking of Axl’s high and low ranges in “Locomotive,” the iconic last few seconds of “You Could Be Mine”... and of course his brilliant rapping in “My World” (lol jk)
