Both were classifiable as "indie darlings" or "character actors" throughout much of the late 90s/early 00s, but both also dabbled in mainstream fare wherever they could. Sam has obviously enjoyed more top-brass recognition in the past decade due to better opportunities, but just in terms of plain talent, who's your pick?

The guy who played Doctor Manhattan for me, but both of them are very talented, and there is very little to seperate them.

I like Rockwell more and voted for him....... but they are different in a way too in that Rockwell can go off the page and be thrilling or miss....and Crudup almost never goes off the page and almost never misses imo ..........but doesn't strike actual gold as much....... Both of these guys were great on stage too in the times I saw them: Crudup in The Elephant Man (no make-up, essentially Bradley Cooper took a lot from Crudup's work) and Rockwell was aces in American Buffalo......Crudup is I think the more discplined actor anyway

Crudup in Almost Famous is the best performance between them but I'd take Rockwell overall.

I like them both a lot, but I'd take Rockwell and his fire any day of the week. He's one of the most entertaining actors on the planet. As Crudup's looks fade, I'm not even sure how much he has left to offer, never having watched him starring alongside Vanilla and Even More Vanilla on Apple TV.
I would have loved to see him in The Pillowman, because that requires a side that, as far as I can recall, he's rarely gotten to show on screen.

He's actually really dynamite on The Morning Show (as "dynamite" as one can be within the confines of a scripted serial which passed its peak), but he also looks like he aged a decade between the first and third season.

I've long thought Sam Rockwell to be one of the best working actors, so I'm sticking with him. He's been good in everything I've seen him in, but his performance in Moon, in particular, is one of my favorites from the 2000s. It took a talented man to carry that off.

This poll actually prompted me to watch World Traveler (2001) today... I just find Crudup's work to be so soulful... It sears in how honest and subtle it is. I like Rockwell fine, but Crudup's is the style of acting I'm drawn to, so I have to go with him.

Sam Rockwell for sure . I've always found Billy Crudup to be tedious as fuck. He's very hot, though.

Even in smaller parts like 20th Century Women, Jackie, and Spotlight, he always delivers what he needs to.
