Payne (after the failure of Downsizing) was accused of something like statutory rape by Rose MacGowan, expressly denied it, and went away for a few years. Then came back with a film more or less matching his pre-Downsizing Oscar successes. Do you think O. Russell will accomplish something similar in the wake of the lingering stink of his groping allegation and the failure of Amsterdam? His next film appears to be the Lisa Ronstadt biopic with Selena Gomez.

David O. Russell (The O is for 'Oh fuck, not this guy again') ain't been fit to lace Payne's boots a day in his life, and it's ridiculous to even compare them. I think part of Payne's sustained success has been his willingness to work with other people's writing. The only time Russell did that was the last time he made a movie worth watching.

It seems to me like DOR doesn't have anything more to say. I feel he's artistically finished... Nebraska didn't work for me, but I wouldn't have said this about Payne.

I do like Huckabees quite a lot, but The Descendants is the only Payne film I'd take any Russell one over. Anyway, back on topic, to me, post Silver Linings, I think Russell just looks lost. Like he has no clue what he is doing or wants to do. It's like he's just throwing shit at the screen and seeing what sticks. Can he rein that back in, or has he lost his fucking mind? I lean towards the latter.

Payne was able to credibly argue against McGowan's claims and came back in awards favor with a small indie film like all the rest of his movies.
O. Russell admitted to the incident to police (saying it was consensual) and already has a negative reputation in some Hollywood circles (including among studio execs as seen in the leaked Sony emails) for being verbally abusive in multiple incidents. His leash was as long as he turned a profit and generated awards success, both of which ran out after American Hustle. His ability to command the larger studio budgets he was beginning to enjoy have died out and he's a PR nightmare for anything that would require him to be part of the press.

The main difference between the two is that Payne has always been a critics favorite. He has fans in the critics circle. Downsizing is just a blip in between 4 other highly critically praised films. This board doesnt like The Descendants but that was a favorably received movie.
While O Russell has some fans, I dont think he was ever as critically praised as Payne. He seemed to have a hot period tho, from 2010-2013. Payne is not really a director with any real hot period...hes closer to Richard Linklater.
Personally, Election and Sideways are better than anything from O Russell, but I think The Fighter and Three Kings are better than About Schmidt and The Descendants. I even think Joy and Silver Linings Playbook might be better than those.
But I think Payne is overall stronger, and I haven't even seen The Holdovers. (I'm cheap. I wait for video release for pretty much every movie)

Why do people call him O. Russell instead of just Russell? No one references Michael J. Fox as J. Fox.

The talent level is just completely different here. Payne made one meh movie and then took a hiatus but his track record before that is so much better. I'd take Election, Descendants, and Nebraska over any O. Russell movie. Why do people call him O. Russell instead of just Russell? No one references Michael J. Fox as J. Fox. I don't have enough respect for O. Russell to call him by one name.
