NOMINEES
Critics Choice and BAFTA went with Oppenheimer and Poor Things. Neither made the list.
Only five times has the Visual Effects winner failed to win a single VES award. This year, we saw The Creator winning 5 VES awards and Guardians of the Galaxy taking 2 awards. The Visual Effects Society Awards have been around since 2002.
Godzilla told home 7 Visual Effects Critics Circle trophies, while The Creator came in a close second with 5.
Spider-Man 2 is the only Marvel win to Best Visual Effects.
Single nominations rarely win here. The last two times were in 1993 (Death Becomes Her) and 2017 (The Jungle Book).
It has been pointed out to me on Twitter/X, that since 2000, only three films have won Best Visual Effects without a production design nomination. They were Spider-Man 2, Ex Machina, and The Jungle Book. 2 out of those 3 winners were up against nominees without a production design nomination. Ex Machina is the only odd ball. Out of the five nominees, Napoleon is the only one with a production design nomination.
What is everybody's thoughts on Visual Effects? Does the production design nomination really give Napoleon the edge?

The Creator feels like the one that makes the most sense in terms of scale, but Godzilla Minus One is the only one I can imagine spoiling. Plus it's the one getting the most actual buzz about the work itself.

I feel like what The Creator pulled off, on an 80 million dollar production budget in terms of visual effects was freaking spectacular. It looked better than most effects heavy blockbusters with 3 times the budget.
So that deserves to win, imho.

Truly one of the most difficult questions of the season, maybe the most difficult one with how crazy this category is this year.
Napoleon may win because it's the only "prestige" title here but at the same time it couldn't even win the VES award losing to fucking Nyad of all things. Then again, the whole of AMPAS votes here so that may work in its favor. But will the whole of AMPAS realize just how many effects are there in the film?
The Creator may win because it's clearly the effects story of the year and because of how good/plentiful the effects themselves are but will the voters be bothered to watch it? Will it be a priority? Chances are it won't be.
Godzilla Minus One certainly had a good narrative but it hasn't really caught on in the same way it happened with RRR and Original Song. Again, will the voters be seeing it at all? A non-English language film has never won this award (and they've barely been nominated) too... but maybe another stat will be broken?
Guardians may theoretically take it as the biggest hit of the nominees but is there an impulse to award Marvel at this point? Not quite seeing it.
Don't really see a path for M:I to win except for a "franchise recognition" explanation... which I don't personally buy.
So who am I predicting? I guess I'm gonna go with The Creator. Maybe the word about its undeniably impressive acheivement will have spread by now. But really, what a tough call.
As for the VFX/Production Design statistic, it seems totally incidental to me.
