Which non-Best Picture category would you want to see them end the show with? Nolan would be a safe, easy bet everyone would be pretty happy with. But wouldn't it be fun of them to save Stone vs. Gladstone for last?
Are there any years in the past where you think it would've actually been a good move to end the ceremony with something besides Best Picture?

Best Picture should be left last. It is the biggest award of the night.
Tracy Morgan put it best:

But, as a thought experiment, imagine if the 2022 ceremony ended on Will Smith, or if the 2019 ended with the Olivia Colman surprise (or Cuaron, or anything but Green Book..)

Are there any years in the past where you think it would've actually been a good move to end the ceremony with something besides Best Picture? The year John Wayne won has by far the largest domestic Oscar audience in history and is one of the most watched US television broadcasts ever because so many people were tuning in to see him win. Wiki says 85 million. The BP (Midnight Cowboy I think) probably felt like an anticlimax.

I don't mean to throw shade at your question. But lets face it: It's was a disaster when they put Actress and Actor as the final two categories. People were expecting to see Boseman winning. When Hopkins won, he wasn't at the ceremony or even watching the ceremony. It ended with Joaquin Phoenix looking confused.
But if we were to go the "thought experiment" route, I guess you would go with the more tight races. If Giamatti & Gladstone (somebody else not named Emma Stone) won the SAG, then those would be the two primary categories to consider as "last".
If you ended on any technical awards, people would shut off the television before the end.
You always save the biggest award of the night for last because that's the category, people most want to see win.

Ending on Smith would have been horrible. If it ended on Smith, then maybe they could have ended with him in handcuffs.
