whew, with my Succession viewing wrapped up I've finally seen enough to put a bow on 2023 TV. I feel like I just keep watching more and more (63 shows this year ), but I don't have any regrets. Even with the strikes, 2023 TV was strong across all categories and even the shows that will go un-nominated I'm glad I saw. First some... Brief housekeepingNo docuseries this year. Also axed is the New Show category which often overlapped with my top-line comedy and drama picks and was kinda redundant. In another change, both comedy & drama guest categories have been split into two categories by gender like the Emmys (More noms, more fun). Everything else is the same: three fields for drama, comedy and limited series respectively with an extra misc category for opening title sequence. the 63 eligible programs (up 5 from last year's 58) Drama Ahsoka The Buccaneers The Crown season 6 The Curse The Diplomat Gen V The Gilded Age season 2 The Gold Heartstopper Hijack The Last of Us Loki season 2 The Mandalorian season 3 The Morning Show season 3 Outlander season 7 part I Perry Mason season 2 Servant season 4 Silo Slow Horses season 3 Succession season 4 Your Honor season 2 The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Yellowjackets season 2

Limited Series All the Light We Cannot See Beef Daisy Jones & the Six Dead Ringers Dear Child The Fall of the House of Usher Fargo season 5 Fellow Travelers Full Circle I'm a Virgo Lessons in Chemistry The Long Shadow Love & Death Mrs. Davis A Murder at the End of the World Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story The Reckoning A Small Light Swarm Time series 2 Tiny Beautiful Things
Blindspots: not so much this year but there's always a few stragglers. Righteous Gemstones, The Continental, One Piece, Rap Shit (RIP), Drops of God, American Born Chinese, Foundation, The Wheel of Time, anything created by Taylor Sheridan, The Big Door Prize, Minx, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, some others. okey dokey, the house has been kept. Nominees will be announced tomorrow night.

one last category + fun stats BEST OPENING TITLE SEQUENCEDaisy Jones & the Six (Prime Video) Outlander (Starz) Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (Netflix) Succession (HBO) What We Do in the Shadows (FX) __________________________________________________________________ statistics-- HBO / Max once again received the biggest haul with 30 noms across 7 programs. Netflix and FX trail with a respectable 21 each -- Succession, The Last of Us, and The Bear tie for most noms with a whopping 11 each!! -- of the 63 eligible programs, 39 received at least one nomination -- Lowest earners are Freevee and Disney+ with single noms for Jury Duty and Loki respectively. -- Previous heavyhitters falling from grace in 2023 include What We Do in the Shadows, Barry and Sex Education for their most recent seasons. TBH I thought they were all decent-to-very good, but varying degrees of disappointing relative to past showings. All fell victim to a hyper-competitive comedy field. WINNERS to be announced this coming Sunday night (Feb 25th)

some closing remarks from Tommen Awards president Tommen Saperstein -- Succession had the benefit of the show I watched last but there's no recency bias in its dominance. I didn't fully fall in love with the show until season 3 but I never looked back, and season 4 propelled the Roy kids in stunning new directions while consistently re-emphasizing their toxic dynamic and lingering childhood trauma on the periphery of every choice they make. Previous seasons gave different opportunities to different characters (like Ken's rock bottom being a focal point of S3) but with Logan out of the picture in S4, everyone had their moments to shine and every episode in the backhalf provided new turning points for the characters & performances. Tom & Shiv's balcony brawl in "Tailgate Party", Rome's failed eulogy in "Church & State", Ken's desperate maneuvering in the finale. Nearly everyone topped themselves in S4. (ftr I loved Last of Us too but a couple weak episodes set it apart from Succession which was consistently strong throughout and got better towards the end) -- speaking of The Last of Us, "Infected" is one of the most perfect horror TV episodes I've seen, slowly building from the nightmare-inducing Jakarta intro (where was the Emmy nom for my girl Christine Hakim??) to the clicker-infested museum and finally the stomach-churning climax in the Mass State House. This was the first episode in the show to fully introduce viewers to the chaotic horror of cordyceps. As much as I enjoyed the more existential and familiar horror of Succession's "America Decides", "Infected" was the most consistently gripping drama TV episode I saw in 2023. That ending still haunts me. -- All I can say about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is that the Palladinos clawed it back after disappointing 3rd and 4th seasons. With the renewed focus on Midge and Susie, the show's final season was funnier and more emotionally resonant than it's been in years, and Brosnahan and Borstein (whose shtick devoid of direction felt lazy in the previous season) more than showed up to match the stronger material. The comeback kid of 2023 TV. -- Carrigan carried the last season of Barry, especially in the weaker second half. I already talked about how disappointing the season was compared to its predecessors, but Hank's development throughout S3 and S4 became the most gripping (and heartbreaking) aspect of the show towards the end, and Carrigan absolutely nailed every second of it. "You're Charming" came *this close* to an episode nomination, and not just because of Fred Armisen's face. So many memorable moments in that ep especially for Carrigan, not the least being Hank's phone call with an incarcerated Barry. " Enjoy hell." ok that's a wrap folks! Film Awards coming mid-March at the earliest. Have a few things left to see and don't wanna rush it.
