I mean really rooted for a nominated performance! And did they win?
Mine was Brie for Room. I don't think I've ever rooted for anyone as much since then.

Unfortunately, she didn't win, but I was so thrilled for her nomination, as it was uncertain after that shocking SAG snub. My heart was pounding so hard when Leslie Jordan called her name!

In terms of actively championing my fandom? Rylance. I was conductor of that train all that season (with Jango as my dependable aide-de-camp).
But Frances McDormand 2.0, Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins were pretty damn close to that level. Kerry Condon, too, but there goes that dream.

Lead Actor: Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Lead Actress: Julianne Moore for Still Alice. Most recent years had a couple good contenders I'd have been happy with. I was rooting for Olivia Colman for The Lost Daughter more recently, but she didn't really have a chance then. Supporting Actor: Barry Keoghan for The Banshees of Inisherin, but he also barely had a chance. The last contender I was rooting for in a competitive year was Tom Hardy for The Revenant. Supporting Actress: Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin, or Emma Stone for The Favorite

Only do it when it seems possible but isn't a slam dunk.
Hopkins and Colman (so quite happy).
Condon (so quite sad)

Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards and Julianne Moore for Still Alice would probably be last for me among eventual wins. Was also rooting for Bale for Vice obviously Willem Dafoe for that Van Gogh movie but I already knew he barely had a chance.

Actor: Anthony Hopkins, The Father. Actress: Blanchett, Tár. Penélope the year before. My favorite never wins this category. Supporting Actor: Pacino, The Irishman. Supporting Actress: Atrocious category... I'd have to go back to Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom.

Quite regularly there's a Best Actress contender I'm rooting for but doesn't win. Blanchett, Cruz, Huppert, Rampling, Riva, Pike but of couse is nice when it happens (Colman)

Phoenix in Joker for the memes. Want Giamatti to pull the upset this year too because I really liked the performance.
Manville in Phantom Thread and all of Saoirse's nods for other recent ones.

Easy answer, Cate Blanchett for Tar. I was all over that. I think that's a performance that deserves to go down as legendary. Oscar loss, be damned.

Easier to passionately root for someone if they're bot guaranteed the win, so I'll say Kerry Condon.

Interesting question, my rooting usually falls on directors or tech people, hmm. It's hard to really root for someone when the season kind of lets you know they're not gonna win... so taking that into consideration, my answer would probably be Olivia Colman for The Favourite, since she was in real danger of losing to a truly inferior performance under a career-win scenario. But just overall "You go, man/girl!" rooting, even if they didn't have a shot? Cate Blanchett and Michelle Williams last year, I guess. Yeah-yeah, they were in the same category, so what Yeoh was winning anyway, as we found out later in the season.

Actually, with the waterfalls of haterade dropped upon him throughout the season, I'm rooting for Coops

Despite following the Oscars pretty religiously for over ten years now, I don’t think I’ve ever rooted for someone to win. The performances I love just never happen. I remember really hoping for Rampling to get the nomination in 2015.

I think Michael Keaton was the last time I was particularly disappointed to see someone lose in a close race.
I can't think of anyone who pulled it off where I'd been like, really on the edge of my seat by the Oscars hoping they'd get it. Usually what happens is I root hardest for the nomination and then I've accepted the possibilities by the time the ceremony rolls around.
With close races, even if I have a preference I'm just curious to see what happens! Like I would have been very happy to see Stallone win but Rylance was also deserving. I never cared to see The Wife so really had no opinion on Glenn Close winning, I'm not against the sentimentality of career Oscars but Colman was a fun surprise.
And I've rooted for steamrollers early on, hoping it'll pan out and it's always nice when I'm on their side as they sweep. I was very invested in Heath Ledger winning so that was gratifying to see.

Actor: Now for Paul Giamatti, but before that, Casey Affleck, who highly deserved it. Actress: Now for Lily Gladstone, but before that, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, but she lost to someone who did deserve it so oh well. Supporting Actor: Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight, but despite his film winning Best Picture, I don't think he was higher than third. I was predicting Stallone to get it. Supporting Actress: Last year with Angela Bassett, especially since I'm a Marvel fan. That would have been awesome had she won. I also thought Curtis and Hsu were going to cancel each other out for being in the same movie.
