Went from being one of the great scene stealers to one of the sturdiest leading men of all time… Happy 100th, legend.

An absolute legend. I make a point to watch The Big Red One once a year.

My top 10 of a top 10 actor of mine (in no order): 1. Death Hunt2. Bad Day at Black Rock3. Emperor of the North4. The Professionals5. Prime Cut6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance7. The Big Heat8. Hell in the Pacific9. The Dirty Dozen10. Point BlankOne of the baddest motherfuckers to ever walk the planet. A stone-cold classic top ten (though my Big Red One-lovin' heart hurts not seeing it represented, but I can't really argue against any of these). We are sorely lacking in Lee Marvin-style "man against the elements" movies nowadays.

Pretty much always enjoy him, whether a bit supporting part or lead character.

Man is such a legend, he inspired a comic-book character who becomes Catwoman’s lover/mentor...

A stone-cold classic top ten (though my Big Red One-lovin' heart hurts not seeing it represented, but I can't really argue against any of these). We are sorely lacking in Lee Marvin-style "man against the elements" movies nowadays. I forgot to delete the "in no order" caveat after I went back and listed them in order of favorites. It did my heart sad to leave off Siegel's excellent adaptation of The Killers, as well as Aldrich's superb Attack (that's really the Palance and Albert show anyways) and his magnificent, 2-scene stealing wonder in The Comancheros. Need to catch The Big Red One again, it's been a while. All this even excludes his Oscar-winning turn in Cat Ballou. Strength of filmography is one of my main criteria when assessing an actor, and Marvin certainly knew how to choose 'em. I've always wondered how The Wild Bunch would turned out had he not turned it down...unlike Sunset Blvd., this is an instance I'm actually glad Holden stepped in as a replacement
