The obvious difference with Riseborough was that some huge A-list talent were really throwing their names behind her - Winslet, Paltrow, Amy Adams... Frances Fisher only gained notoriety from it because she broke the rules, lol. That campaign would have been better off if it had failed in getting the nod. The backlash ensued because 2 women of color, got snubbed. Riseborough was pretty much ignored at the Oscars. The media wasn't chasing her down. And it's not Hollywood A-list directors, producers have cast her for big budget projects. Actually looking back I don't necessarily think Riseborough was hurt by the nomination itself/ensuing backlash as much as by the fact that To Leslie is just such a nothing movie. Whether she got nominated or not was probably never gonna make much of a difference as nobody really cared about her performance or the film (yes I know many people here love her in the film, but I'm talking about the industry and general movie fans). The siuation is very different from what we usually see when a small indie film gets a breakout star/veteran their first nomination. Those films (Aftersun, You Can Count on Me, Animal Kingdom etc.) or performances are usually well-loved by at least a decent amount of people, and that passion could launch a budding film career/orchestrate a resurgence, so even when they fail to receive nods, the conversations during the season make a big difference anyway (e.g., Melton, de Leon, Hong Chau in Downsizing etc.).

I'm sure the media wanted to interview her (about the controversy - certainly not about the film or her performance, lol), but she was silent for weeks after the nomination, and she didn't even appear on the Oscars Red Carpet IIRC. It really was a huge misfire for her and those who campaigned for her... She handled the ceremony with class and grace.

Bradley wanted a man to come inside him every day, no surprises there.

Uh oh I seriously can't wait for this man's next Oscar-begging follow-up. It's going to be incredible.

stephen - You know it's going to be about the Holocaust. Considering how it looks like he took a leaf from Bohemian Rhapsody's book when he made Maestro in giving a vacuous, surface-level impression of his subject rather than bothering to explore Bernstein's humanity, it's clear that losing to Malek really did a number on Cooper, and I feel like when he loses to Murphy, his follow-up will be trying to follow his blueprint. So yeah, I expect him to play Pierre Curie with Lady Gaga as Marie (and Carey Mulligan as the radium).

I'm wondering if Cooper is aware (I'm sure he is) of the backlash he is getting. I can imagine him doing the opposite next time by not campaigning as much and probably taking a role which doesn't tick those boxes the Academy loves.

Ironically, he had barely campaigned for Best Actor for A Star Is Born. He spent a lot more time campaigning for Best Director and consequently turning off a lot of voters, but he wound up neglecting the race he had a very real chance of winning before Malek was able to get an industry stranglehold.

I'm wondering if he's making the same mistake now. He's doing a lot of Q&A's with high profile directors saying he loves the whole process speaking more as a filmmaker. Every now and again he'll throw a quote out there that he felt Lenny was with him everyday. Not by any means comparing him to Newman but at one point he gave up on the Oscars after losing so many times and they eventually gave him one when he didn't expect it (at Bob Hoskins expense 😡).

No, he’d have to go full DeNiro/Bale and gain the weight

Oh, he's absolutely overdoing it now, especially now that the writing's on the wall. There's the slimmest chance it could still work as SAG voting only just now closed and they're the basic-est of bitches, but there's no real proof anyone actually watched Maestro. I actually think Cooper's best shot at an Oscar win is if he doesn't direct it or campaign for it. No one likes these method-actor stories about being inhabited by the ghost of their dead subject, or how much weight they gained/lost, or the weird shit they had to do to get in character. You notice how Daniel Day-Lewis never talks about his process? The man specifically doesn't talk about it, but other people do it for him. That's the (silver linings) playbook Cooper needs to be following, but the man has no self-awareness.
