Ok, I always say this is the dumbest thing - that Oscars (or Emmys or Tonys etc) don't "equal" championships etc. ..........that should be obvious - how you judge a performance has nothing common with your "feelings" on a sporting event - sporting events have factual outcomes........acting has opinion outcomes But I thought this might fun to throw against the wall ....... 30 REASONS ACTING IS A SPORT actingcoachscotland.co.uk/blog/acting-art-or-sportIt’s essentially a physical skill – anyone can learn it with certain restrictions. The ‘performance’ occurs as a result of an interaction between the ‘players’. You do it in front of spectators. There are people paid to get the best out of you when you do it. Everything is a reaction to the goal of the game and what is happening in that moment. It’s competitive (characters compete to win – achieve their goals) There are basic rules to follow The strategy for the game is planned in advance and practised but as the game itself unfolds, it takes on a fluid quality where the game occurs from moment to moment. Focus on the self, usually means ‘taking your eye off the ball’. People write about you unkindly in the newspaper sometimes. You wear a special outfit to play. It is played within a fixed time period. No two games are ever the same. Sometimes spectators leave before the end. It doesn’t matter what you say, it really only matters what you do. You get feedback after you do it. It can be done alone, or also in groups. Selection to do it professionally is extremely tough. Some people get paid a fortune to do it The opportunities for men are still better than they are for women. You practice together before you do it. Not everyone follow’s the coach’s advice. You get to roll around on the ground pretending to be hurt. If you do it exceptionally well, you might end up television. There is dramatic tension when people don’t know what will happen next. People laud those that are very good at it. People treat those that do it like it comes naturally to them and conveniently turn a blind eye to all the work that goes on behind the scenes. The people that do it are notoriously bad at talking about what they do Not being properly prepared leads to the pain of losing in public. The instincts have to be trained and heightened levels of sensitivity are developed.

As you noted acting is 100% subjective while sports aren't. We like tallying Oscar nods and wins like MVP's and championships for athletes but in sports if you win an MVP you're clearly really good even if some years they may be some controversy about the decision. Like, if you think a QB with 40 TD passes and 5k yards in a season or a baseball player with a 1000 OPS is "bad" then you're just wrong. On the other hand we can all point to Oscar nominated and winning performances we think are trash. And of course other people might like those performances and nobody is "wrong".

Even the shittiest professional athlete that we perceive to be bad is still in the top 1% of their profession... the same can't be said about actors... otherwise Malin Akerman would never appear on screen (with clothes, at least).

By definition, you can't really compare actors' skill in an objective sense unless they play the same role under the same basic conditions (which rarely if ever happens), so it's not like sports in that sense. It's entirely subjective, playing to our own biases and what we perceive as great strengths. There are several metrics we can use as yardsticks for comparative purposes (box-office draw, number of awards, capacity in various media, critical success in numerous and diverse roles, etc.), but at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal feelings.

I remember when ice figure skating had a different system of rating - basically the 9 judges chose basing on their preferences - so it could be seen as more similar to an acting competition.

I love it when you can look at a thread title and immediately know who started it But yea I’m gonna go with the consensus here and say acting is not sport. It can give a sporty impression since, as mentioned, we like to look at awards and box office numbers like we do MVP awards and - no one has mentioned this one yet - jersey sales. There’s also fanaticism around actors similar to how you would get with athletes. I mean, just look at the Denzel vs Pacino debates on here, it looks a lot like people arguing Messi vs Ronaldo or Jordan vs Lebron But at the end of the day it’s the subjectivity that makes the difference, as has already been hammered home in this thread. If the pacman as a Pacino fan were to say that Denzel is a shitty actor, that’s just his subjective opinion. He would be wrong to say that because Denzel is not actually a shitty actor but what he said can’t be quantifiably proven true or false. On the other hand if I as a Ronaldo fan were to say that Messi is a shitty soccer player, that is objectively an absolutely preposterously false statement

Acting is not a sport, but sports can definitely become acting when guys flop for fouls.

Sports fans are a million times more fanatic than any movie/tv fans.

IRL yes absolutely, but on message boards online or on twitter some of the movie/tv fans can give the sports fans a run for their money but sports will always be the most fanatical

Well at least in Sports the rivalries make sense - Messi / Ronaldo .....Gretzky / Lemieux......Jordan / LeBron .......on movie boards - this movie board anyway - asshats just think their favorite actor can just bypass logic to rival the very best ..........because some asshat randomly decides he can challenge the biggest actors ...pffft......in Sports at least nobody does Joe Burrow vs. Tom Brady threads and says Burrow has now surpassed Montana and similar weird shit.......

No, but it was clear early on that Mahomes was going to end up in the GOAT QB discussion, that Burrow is a clutch and dangerous performer, etc. In 2007 I didn't say to myself "Gosling is a greater actor than Jack Nicholson", but I certainly connected with what he was doing in Fracture and Lars and the Real Girl more than anything in Nicholson's vaunted career, so I would have been willing to say he's a more talented actor even that early. Doesn't mean he'll get 12 Oscar nominations, be in a film as iconic as some of Jack's, etc.
