Why isn't Country Music at the Super Bowl Halftime Show? Has there been a Country Artist since Shania Twain do it? I'm serious - I don't remember.......... Beyonce is doing it.................... LDR is making her move to it a bit too ......... Sheryl Crow already did it.......that gay dude that uses Nas name (wtf) has made it more diverse (um, I guess) and less White Supremacist - that was a joke you wackjob.....................one of the best vocalists going - Kacey Musgraves is a Country Singer - sort of....pacinoyes' BEST songwriter going these days regardless of genre - CMAT - is an Irsh woman working US Camp-y Country at times.....sometimes she throws it out the window though.........the biggest star on the planet has deep connections to it ( Taylor Swift, duh) I always say Country music can never really go out of fashion because it is the only one where you can almost always hear the words and get the story..........it's all about story telling....... Thoughts? Fave artists? Old school only? or Contemporary too? pacinoyes fave songs include a lot of Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Uncle Tupelo, Country & Westerberg (um), She Thinks I Still Care, Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down ............and well lots and lots of songs about Bottles. ........ urbanpatrician rises.........

I love Beyoncé's new song, but I really don't think of it as country... I guess it has some country "flavor"? What do you think?

I sometimes listen to:
Willie Nelson Emmylou Harris Dolly Parton (tho maybe I just like her pop culturely) Loretta Lynn Taylor Swift Kacey Musgraves
I think 5 out of 6 of these are well praised.... sole exception being Dolly. Tho I dunno... is she praised or not?? And 5 out of 6 are pop culture icons.... Kacey Musgraves only one NOT.
Do you listen to Bjork, pacinoyes? I personally don't, but she feels like someone this board would go nuts for... becasue she was in a Von Trier movie... lol. Like Haim was in that PTA movie and this board starts ranking Haim albums.

My gf loves Bjork .............. I don't mind her but she's not like a "love" of mine iike Kim Shattuck in The Muffs or PJ Harvey etc. - The Sugarcubes album Life's Too Good is one my gf's favorites .........that one I dig .............and Bjork is really dynamic on that record. Also I do love this nutzoid cover song (solo) ..........this is so great:

Beyonce turning into a blonde white lady AND doing a country album? Man, she wants Album of the Year so fucking bad. Anyway, I love country music, but mainly the older stuff. Emmylou, Loretta, Tammy, Dolly, Linda, Willie, Johnny, the Carter's, Townes, Gram, and Hank. When it comes to the new I'd say Steve Earle is the last I'd consider a favourite, though I liked some of those Kacey Musgraves tunes from a few years ago, and Swifty when she was kinda sorta Country.

I love Beyoncé's new song, but I really don't think of it as country... I guess it has some country "flavor"? What do you think? I mean this one is way more country than Texas Hold Em. Singing about whiskey and hoedowns doesn’t make something country. Regardless, 16C is a masterpiece imo. Call it whatever genre you want

I am so happy about this - what with the racial inequality in the racist US ........that prevented Idris Elba from you know, having an impressive big time window career and shit ....made myself laugh....... Grammy race starts NOW: LOS ANGELES -- Beyoncé made history once again: The superstar singer has become the first Black woman to top Billboard's country music chart. The Grammy winner achieved the feat after her new single “Texas Hold 'Em" reached No. 1 on the country airplay chart this week.

pacinoyes might feel validated. albumoftheyear ranked CMAT as the 36th best country album of all time. Nobody, no country fans I know has ever heard of CMAT..... so pacinoyes gets a win here for introducing to the world to his love affair with this Irish broad. I still haven't heard it, btw. Will.... soon.... I guess. More country:Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is definitely a classic. Top 5 country album. Only 4 would make my Top 50 of all Time and that's one of them.) Anais Mitchell Patty Loveless Iris Dement Pre-Mutt Lange breakup Shania Twain (was good in that late 90s aesthetic ala Faith Hill, Strawberry Wine, and LeAnn Rimes.... cupboard country music stuff)

I've never been a regular country listener, I've always enjoyed Johnny Cash and stuff but a couple summers ago I took a road trip through Memphis and Nashville en route to see Paul McCartney in Knoxville and figured if I was ever gonna do a big country music binge, now would be the time. So except for Beatles and Macca as I got closer to the concert, I listened to nothing but country music for 3 days.
My favorite first listen from that trip:

Country is a Top 5 favorite genre of mine. I don't care what the rock guys say.... which is the only thing anyone here listens to anyways.
Because I'd take country over rock. I am no rock guy at all, but I'm pretty much the only one here.
I liked this song at 12 years old. One of my go-to songs, and I still like it today.

Huh? Beyonce is a light skinned black woman. She doesn't look white at all even with this blonde hair. Also, I don't think she did this to win AOTY. The 3 act project has been in the works for several years.
The reason she's not winning AOTY is because she has a ton of people on each album like having multiple songwriters for one song especially due to how frequently she samples. Personally, I don't think that's an issue bc I think sampling is an art form, and I love it. But the RA seems to dislike it. They don't want to give out 50 Grammys for one album

Does anyone here listen to Waxahatchee?
8.8 pitchfork rating her new album. Looks like the country or alt-country album of the year.
Come on people. Does anyone like country here? Or it's just Beatles/Pink Floyd/Radiohead each and all day long???

You know I realized early on in my life that the majority of music I like is made by great sarcastic smart asses - Dylan, Ray Davies, Alex Chilton on Big Star's 2nd / 3rd records especially, Elvis Costello, Johnny Thunders, Paul Westerberg, Ike Reilly, Pavement, etc
I also realized Pitchfork ratings tend to value people more like Radiohead, The Arcade Fire, Waxahatchee etc who may be many things but smart asses ain't one of them
Fuck em if they can't take a joke I say........

Oh it's ok. I like Waxie but I dont love her. Witches slays but that's the only song I love from her. Im surprised you already got around to hearing it I'm just hoping this album lays her good but a bit high rated 2020 effort to waste. I've been waiting for that Wet Leg for 2 years now. According to Rhian it sounds like it lays their first album to waste. I'm hoping that's the case anyways. OVERALL... Lucinda, Kacey, Taylor, and Loretta are my IT girls. In the country front.

I knew by heart O Brother Where Are Thou? before I even watched the movie years and years later.... I love country music, it's comfort zone for me. Late 90s/early 00s that's where I found the pop anthems that pop wasn't delivering, even to this day I might say. I'd love to come up with some deep cuts/lesser known artist but what draw me to the genre was the mega stars of the day. Shania was the introduction, that lead to mostly all the female singers/songwriters of the time and then from the past (a major part of my cd collection is just albums from that era). As a result Loretta, Patsy, Dolly and Emmylou are among my favorite artists ever. Alisson Krauss is right up there as well, Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams also (although I don't always think of them as country singers). On the younger side of course Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert and Taylor (preferably in her republican friendly era). For the guys there's Cash, Paisley, Brooks, Chris Stapleton....
I see what Taylor or Kacey do a more organic move but when someone like Beyonce decides to go that way is a bit suspicious but well, at least what she's doing is professional and sounds expensive unlike what poor Jessica Simpson desperately attempted decades ago and I don't think she ever recovered.

Damn great post man. SHANIA was also my entry level artist into this genre. Jessica Simpson is another one of my entry level names, but shes a weird mix. I would say shes teen pop with a country aesthetic but with huge diva tendencies. I absolutely love Where You Are, I Wanna Love You Forever, and I Think I'm in Love With You. And I like Fearless-Speak Now Taytay the most. And then fast forward 10 years Folklore-Evermore. Genuinely shocked there are people here like ibbi and @avner who listens to pretty much everything I do.

Yeah you really are plugged in. I can't procure albums that fast. Genuinely curious if you have any interest in procuring Kings of Leon or Matchbox 20 3 months in advance. You have pretty unique taste pacinoyes. It almost feels like a personal identity you've carved for yourself. The urbanpatrician guys on the other hand are Wayne Coyne, David Tibet, Stephen Merritt, MBV, Slowdive, Sonic Youth, Hope Sandoval, Jenny Lewis, Neutral Milk Hotel, Cold Womb Descent, Fishmans, Boredoms, the Velvets, Anja Plaschj and of course the almighty Prince. But who cares...right? Back to talking ScarJo and Dicaprio.

urbanpatrician at the time I was secretly rooting for Jessica Simpson, I wanted her to be on Xtina's level but looking back at some of her live performances, she desperately needed a vocal trainer, there was too much commitment on her part. And yes, Taylor's covid era is peak Taylor.

YES BABYJessica Pratt 8.8 new album Pitchfork. Country - unlike rock, punk, disco or jazz.... is not dead. I liked the previous 2 Jessica Pratt albums, but not quite to #1 of the year level.... tho 2019 was a hard year to dent. Maybe this is the album to do it.
