Late Night With The Devil (2024)

This looks right up my alley. Honestly using that "70s horror trailer voice" almost always works for me.

Get into it ffs......

I may actually check this out in theaters for this reason alone

Late Night with the Devil has broken a box office record in its opening weekend. The new found footage horror movie was directed by Australian duo Cameron and Colin Cairnes. Set in a television studio in the 1970s, it stars David Dastmalchian as late night host Jack Delroy, whose attempt to channel the Devil on live television goes disastrously wrong.

Per Deadline, despite the Late Night with the Devil controversy involving the use of some AI imagery, the movie has performed extraordinarily well at the domestic box office. Its projected 3-day total is $2.833 million, which is by far the best opening weekend that the distributor IFC Films has ever had. The next highest-grossing openings for the company were Watcher ($862,000) and Skinamarink ($818,000).

My interest was already killed at found footage, but this is unfortunate

Okay, so...

I liked this. I want to get that out of the way right now. The comedy is mostly solid stuff (the typical late night gags hit the mark), with some real great gags thrown in here and there (including the best delivery of "oh, fuck" I can remember hearing in a movie). Dastmalchian does a great job anchoring the film emotionally, as Jack is the only person on that stage who ever lets his mask slip - every guest is mugging for the camera, which makes his moments of fear and vulnerability stand out against their intentional artificiality. Unfortunately, it's all a bit too slapdash in execution. I don't think it commits to the gimmick hard enough, as the behind the scenes footage doesn't gel with the actual taping of the show stylistically. The ending craziness is a tad too tame and takes a tad too long to get going. The behind the scenes footage in general is too on-the-nose in its exposition, too focused on filling us in instead of letting us experience the wild ride in itself.

But those are honestly small complaints for a movie that has no aspirations to high art, wanting to entertain first and foremost. I'll keep the Cairnes brothers tucked away with Mickey Reece (whose Agnes resembles this a bit, albeit pushing the comedy to a much more constant and ridiculous level) or the Adams Family. Since those are the only horror filmmakers around that I have any respect for, consider me quite excited to see more from these guys.

Ok, lemme see if I got this straight - that PoS Immaculate - blatantly shows a chick and no one has any problems with seeing that (I guess?) - nobody is like "I hear that movie is anti-religion, no thanks!"

.................but you're going to avoid the infinitely better - like a billion times better - Late Night With The Devil - because it used AI for a couple little things and it's found footage?

Good call MAR.......makes sense .......

Late Night With the Devil's use of AI has sparked controversy and its directors, Cameron and Colin Cairnes, have defended the inclusion of AI-generated images, which only appear briefly as title cards.

Now, Mike Flanagan is doubling down in his defense of Late Night With the Devil. The acclaimed horror director posted a positive review of the film on Letterboxd back in November 2023, but after the recent controversy over the film's use of AI, Flanagan added an update to his review on March 21 to say "the movie remains absolutely excellent, and remains highly recommended."

That kind of logic is, for me, how you feel about AI I guess........if it's gonna be my number 1 Worst of the Year (likely)  - I have to have a reason.......doesn't mean anyone is "that mad" about it   ........that's actually a weirdo Leftist (mostly) thing that I find quite annoying (not mad though!) :

"Why do you care about immigrants crossing the border pacinoyes - you live far away from there! Why so mad, bruh live your own life........why do you care so much?"  

If I'm reviewing a nunsploitation from the 70s or a Carlin special it doesn't have anything to do with Immaculate unless I choose to link them which I do not since it doesn't show me titties but does show me her puking up a tooth ..............and it's not as intentionally funny as George Carlin ...........it's just a POV that's all - applying the "term" mad to it is outside my actual critique of it .........it's your thing.......and that's ok.......but it has nothing to do with me tbh

Sorry to bring up your defenses, but I don't think it's much of a stretch to think someone's mad at a movie when they're bringing it up unprompted in threads that have nothing to do with them.

And Martin Stett, yes I am against generative A.I. It's a technological advancement predicated upon having an algorithm steal data from actual people and artists and regurgitating it. It's ethically dubious at best and legitimately anti-human at worst.
