I'm pleased but I feel like this could just go the way of "Most Big Names in a Movie wins."

Someone at ABC will have had a heart attack and died upon reading this news.

I'm pleased but I feel like this could just go the way of "Most Big Names in a Movie wins." Yeah, it's cool that we're gonna have a new category but I really want to understand what it'll mean. Just the Academy's version of Best Ensemble or what exactly? 'Cause I look at the BAFTA's current category and don't quite get it, like when Joker won - was the meaning of the win "great idea casting Phoenix!" or something else? Will AMPAS's version just be for the most stacked cast? Or the most diverse cast? Really curious about the criteria.

BAFTA have done a pretty good job with their Casting category, so I hope the Oscars follow their suit.

Should be interesting to see how much of a BP predictor this becomes.

You had some great grizzled faces in it with Whigham, Camp and Fleshler, among others. But yeah, I feel like the criteria of this is going to very interesting, as it can easily be taken advantage of. Also, at what point can the casting director take credit for roles as opposed to directors pursuing actors, or actors pursuing projects and bringing them to fruition?

I know it wasn't the most popular movie on here but like stephen I thought Joker was very well cast down to all the little parts. Bit characters felt like real people and had a certain look that conveyed something when you first see them. That's what I think of with a "best casting" award although that's different than "best ensemble" I guess. This could end up being a generic BP precursor at first and then start to get more distinctive later.

going back to the director's role, another consideration is when directors work with the same or nearly-same slate of actors across multiple projects, like Mike Leigh (who's working on something rn). How much is a casting director responsible for Leigh's style of improvising with a close group of artistic collaborators?

I'm pleased but I feel like this could just go the way of "Most Big Names in a Movie wins." To be honest. I’m ok if it just becomes Best Ensemble by a different name. I always wanted that category at the Oscar’s but didn’t want them giving all members of the cast their own Oscar’s. So im happy with it just going to the casting director.

I always found the Stunt category to be the more pressing need for the Academy to address. It’s fairly muddy on whether the casting director has “the final say” on the big decisions versus the director or other factors on certain projects.

But see, that's the thing for me: I also thought Joker's bit parts were well-cast but I can say the same thing about many, many, many other movies. How does one such achievement gets put above another? Unless this award goes the way of "most star-studded ensemble of a BP contender", I can see it prioritizing recognition of films like West Side Story or Killers of the Flower Moon where you have expansive casts filled with not especially well-known but very memorable actors who must've been a bitch for the casting people to find, like all the young singing'n'dancing performers in WSS or the Native American performers (plus the rest of the townsfolk) in KOTFM. If that were the category's main idea, I'd be on board with that.

Can't wait to see all the regional Critic's Awards Circles adopt this category for their personal ceremonies next year and proceed to nominate the same 5-7 that they think will most likely be nominated for an Oscar. In turn, this will be another category where the branch voters will be lazy and only vote among the few films that were cited over-and-over by every other group. If this category was around this year, I feel like this would've been the five:
Barbie Killers of the Flower Moon Oppenheimer (probably wins. large ensemble, lots of recognizable names!) Poor Things The Holdovers
At least this category could end up being a...fun(?) "if Best Picture only had 5 nominees, are these the 5?" talking point to analyze.

Add stunt coordination, and I think we’re set. I wonder if this award will be broadcast live. People are already complaining about the length of Oscars.
