The loss of the mid-budget Ed Zwick movie star vehicle

I guess this is a good time to discuss Ed Zwick's impact on directing interesting performances from major movie stars in high profile films, now that he's doing a book tour.  To what degree do you think we've been impoverished by this very solid director effectively having very little presence in the past decade?  Has someone like Gosling been hamstrung by not having mid-budget dramas Zwick used to make that were superior to things like The Ides of March (which I do like by the way)?
