I keep wondering when will the Henry Cavill push end? He's clearly not a movie star, because almost all his films draw flies.
I get that he looks like a movie star, but he's not. He's exactly the kind of guy who should be leading TV or streaming projects exclusively.

I'm a big fan of Cavill, but he suffers from Brad Pitt syndrome: he's a character actor stuck in a leading man's body. I want someone to give him a Tom Hardy in Taboo-esque role where he can really stretch himself.

The films title probably didn’t help either. “Yes two tickets for Arby’s please”.

Why is the marketing centered around him then? Why is he front and centre on the poster over all the other characters?

Why is he front and centre on the poster over all the other characters? I think it was something that Vaughn cooked up. It's completely strange, though given that we heard murmurs that he was essentially playing a supporting character.

Considering the fact I think this is a movie solely based on a cat (NFL TV spots), I'm not shocked at all.
I seriously didn't even know this was a spy movie until about 3 days ago.

The marketing for this film was so off. Everything from the stupid cat to the Argyle sweater motif all over the posters and publicity materials felt lame. Also, Samuel L Jackson is the biggest name in this film, and you'd barely know he was even in it. Why even hire someone like Jackson if you aren't going to milk his profile.

Well Argylle beat my low expectations I suppose...

Cavill's role is about what I expected from the trailers, he's her fictional spy who you only see in cutways in her head during the real action and he periodically pops up as an "advice animal" so to speak for her to tell her what to do. Although him being in the front on all these posters is admittedly a bit weird since he's a supporting role.
SLJ doesn't show up until about 2/3rds of the way through and only has a couple scenes. He might just be friends with Vaughn so he gave him a little part like Nolan was always doing with Michael Caine.
Was not a good movie in any case.

Although him being in the front on all these posters is admittedly a bit weird since he's a supporting role. That was a big (and in my opinion uneccesary) risk for Cavill to let himself be used for the marketing like he was carrying the project. Even if it was a supporting role, the optics still make it seem like he couldn't open a film that was marketed around him. That hurts him career wise, when he should really just have faded into the ensemble.

That's a shame. I adore Bryce Dallas Howard and I really want her to be in a project worth her talent, but she's been saddled with lame blockbusters of late.

I'm a big spy fiction fan and thought the basic concept of this, Romancing the Stone with spies with BDH as the writer, sounded like it could be a lot of fun. And of course Vaughn's track record with these kinds of movies is pretty good between Layer Cake, X-Men First Class, and Kingsman.

Poor Henry Cavill. He is the center of the promotion of the film and although in reality he appears little in the film, many believe that this is a film starring Henry Cavill so he will bear the potential failure of the film.
