Choi Dong-hoon's 2022 Alienoid was one of the highlights of the year for me - a goofy MCU superhero flick blending wuxia martial arts, mind-bending time travel mechanics and both juvenile and slapstick comedy (there's a character named Dog Turd for no earthly reason and I giggle every time someone mentions him) - and I've been looking forward to the sequel ever since the first film was bashed by Korean critics (apparently "fun" is a dirty word now), forcing Choi to re-edit the follow-up.
Well, that follow-up is here, and it's all as glorious and silly as the first film. There is an aggressive amount of recap for people that can't recall the first movie perfectly, which comes off as padding if you watched the original recently, but that's the only major complaint I can give this. It is less daring and utterly batshit than the first film - even if we've added a blind Zatoichi-like swordsman cutting up aliens to our main cast of heroes - but there's a solid core of seeing ourAvengers ragtag bunch of wizards, swordsmen, robots, and dual pistol wielding wuxia fighters assemble for the ultimate climactic climax against literal two-headed giant aliens trying to set off a bomb to destroy planet Earth. The cast is all solid once again, with special mention going to the Sorcerers of Twin Peaks (Jo Woo-jin and Yum Jung-ah) who again stealing the show - their fish out of water shenanigans in 21st century Seoul supply the biggest laughs of the movie. The shapeshifting cat dudes (Lee Si-hoon and Shin Jung-keun) actually get some dramatic scenes this time around and give a heart to the story too - and that's not mentioning some minor characters in part 1 that get a chance to shine here.
It's all terrific entertainment, a wild adventure that sets out to do nothing more than have a good time at the movies.
