The end of an era indeed. What a legend.

Oh jeez, and I was just checking out his IMDb page yesterday. RIP to an underappreciated legend. Man went on a 17 movie run of hits, that was only interrupted by Gaily, Gaily!

R.I.P to a legendary filmmaker. So many excellent, important and era defining films. In The Heat Of The Night, The Cincinnati Kid, The Thomas Crown Affair, Moonstruck, Fiddler On The Roof, A Soldier's Story, The Hurricane. An outstanding body of work!

Man, what a legend. Hell of a career across so long with so many classics under his belt. Who makes Jesus Christ Superstar and Rollerball back to back? This fucking guy.

RIP I talked about this story before - that The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) is the first American movie I can think of where the bad guy gets away with it.......I don't know if that's true ... I believe it is though - it's "known" but kind of glossed over........it may not be "the first" but it was the first one that big I'm pretty sure.......... it's usually reserved for movies from the 70s and I like to think this was on the early curve to that great decade and sensibility. In the Vietnam era it said a whole lot to root for the criminal........ Here he is with THe GOAT in 1 of his 9 Oscar nods (And Justice For Al(l) - a particularly well cast movie - Jewison always cast his movies very well down to the very smallest parts ......

Wow... RIP sir.
Will try to finally squeeze And Justice for All and couple of others in the coming months. Also the one with Downey and Marisa still has my attention.

RIP. I've always thought it was funny that the guy who directed Fiddler on the Roof had the second name Jewison but wasn't Jewish.

R.I.P. A great director of many diverse classics. The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming was great fun and probably my personal fave next to Fiddler on the Roof.

Despite his brilliant career, I feel that he is forgotten when it comes to talking about great film directors. Sometimes I forget that he didn't win the Oscar for In the Heat of the Night. He had a brilliant and varied career.

Despite his brilliant career, I feel that he is forgotten when it comes to talking about great film directors. Sometimes I forget that he didn't win the Oscar for In the Heat of the Night. He had a brilliant and varied career. Probably because he didn't have any flashy signature visual style or motif. He did what was best for his films, not his ego. And his taste in themes and subject matter varied wildly (aside from his 3 films about the African-American and civil rights experience), so he was hard to pigeonhole into the auteur theory, which can be inflated at times, but gets directors the most attention. Great directors like Jewison who serve the material to perfection without trying to call attention to themselves as an "auteur", but can seamlessly move between any genre are often some of the best directors in the business. Someone today like James Mangold fits that mould as well. But for me, Jewison was in the same league as Sidney Lumet, who fit the auteurs theory paradigm a little more easily.

RIP. Very underrated director. Nah. He's a legit giant of cinema. He's only underrated to those who don't know the history of film or it's implications. As Trudeau said, he made some of the most memorable films of the 20th century. That's not exaggeration or hyperbole. I'm glad he's getting these kind of obituaries, acknowledging just how big a deal he was.
