Now that the Screen Actors Guild has announced their acting nominees, lets look at the Best Actor category.
In the last 10 years, the SAG awards have accurately predicted the Best Actor nominees 41/50 times. That comes to 4/5 accuracy per year. SAG was 3/5 in 2013 and 2019. They went 5/5 in 2016, 2020, and 2021.
If we look at the Golden Globe awards, we generally see between 3 to 4 of the Best Drama nominees making it into the Best Actor line-up. 2011 and 2013 were the only Oscar seasons this century where only 2 of the Best Actor nominees were nominated for Best Actor in a Drama from the Globes.
Bradley Cooper for American Sniper (2014), Tommy Lee Jones for In the Valley of Elah (2007), and Ed Harris for Pollock (2000) are the only Best Actor nominees this century without a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Screen Actors Guild, or BAFTA award recognition. Clint Eastwood for Million Dollar Baby didn't get nominated for any of the big 4 individual honors, but he was nominated for Million Dollar Baby's ensemble. Jones and Harris were nominated for the Satellite award. Cooper and Eastwood were riding their films Best Picture wave.
SAG NOMINEES Bradley Cooper - Maestro Colman Domingo - Rustin Paul Giamatti - The Holdovers Cillian Murphy - Oppenheimer Jeffrey Wright - American Fiction
Cillian Murphy and Paul Giamatti won the Golden Globe. Franz Rogowski for Passages took home the New York Film Critics Best Actor award. Paul Giamatti captured the National Board of Review and Critics Choice Association Best Actor prize. Andrew Scott for All of Us Strangers was the Best Actor winner at the National Society of Film Critics awards. Leonardo Dicaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon was nominated for both the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama and the Critics Choice for Best Actor. Barry Keoghan for Saltburn and Teo Yoo for Past Lives made the BAFTA Long List.
Going to throw into the mix Christian Friedel for The Zone of Interest and Matt Damon for Air. Both actors star in films getting major awards consideration in the primary categories.

1. Cillian Murphy 2. Cradley Booper 3. Paul Giamatti 4. Jeffrey Wright 5. Leonardo DiCaprio Same. I think that 5th slot is going to go to either Deonardo LiCaprio or Dolman Comingo.

Problem Mr. President? Did I miss any contenders? Nah, you just added people that clearly aren't contenders. Though I guess including Damon is throwing Pup a bone.

At this point, it's really about who will take the final spot - after Cooper, Giamatti, Murphy, Wright. There are only 3 possibilities - DiCaprio, Domingo, Scott.
I am not quick to write off Domingo - he's the only one with GG, CC, SAG nods - and he made the BAFTA long list. He's also someone who has been around in the industry and of course has the visibility of The Color Purple this year.
Everyone else on the poll is done.

I think it's a 6 person race. 7, if Andrew Scott gets that BAFTA nomination. Do you agree? Domingo is the potential odd man out. I can see them going Dicaprio.
I will be sad, if Domingo doesn't get in. I absolutely loved the performance.

Yes, I think we're down to those 7.

Even by eight grade logic, considering KOTFM is among the top 3 BP Frontrunners with a potential Best Actress winner in Gladstone, DiCaprio should be one of the easiest coattail nominations ever in the Lead Actor category.
