For those who have seen The OA and/or Murder at the End of the World, how do you feel about Marling’s work?
I think after these two shows (haven’t finished Murder but honestly, can’t see it getting better), there’s nothing promising in her work. As a co-writer of these shows, it’s like a descent into weirdly complicated sci fi with a touch of melodrama that doesn’t feel organic or interesting after the initial premise… I don’t know what she’s trying to achieve but it’s all too much packed into these limited series/shorter seasons.
The OA was insanely convoluted for a show that I felt initially intrigued by.
With Murder, it just feels like a really freshman attempt at a murder mystery - tone is off, minimal suspense, and the “modern” techy concepts embedded into the murder mystery just feel a bit too basic to be impressive. I also think Brit Marling needs to stop starring in her own work lol, her as Lee Anderson has just led to this character coming off disappointing after the build up.
ETA: Harris Dickinson was my incentive to start Murder and he did not disappoint, so there’s that
