* I thought of this because someone (wrongly imo, btw) said that Phantom Thread wasn't a comedy which is sort of true but it sort of is though.......and a drama and a romance............and also that post references an Almodóvar interview before that movie saying DDL couldn't do comedy so it was meaningless anyway in relation to Phantom Thread * I think both of the DDL / PTA movies have huge comic elements that DDL didn't really pull off for me prior - though I think it's more in Phantom Thread than TWBB but I do know people who take TWBB as a very dark comedy. I don't think DDL is particularly adept at comedy tbh.......but he was for PTA * Is May December funny or deeply sad? Is Get Out funny, scary or both? Is House of Gucci a tonal clusterfuck or deeply funny? (Napoleon too actually)...........is Spencer a historical film .........or a horror film? What exactly IS Beau is Afraid? What is a movie you never liked and then really liked when you looked at it differently?

Napoleon absolutely worked better when I viewed it through the lens of a comedy about how particularly old century French people are actually insane.

Back-to-back Scorsese's I first watched too young. I think Cape Fear works much better viewed as some kind of sick black comedy, and Age of Innocence as a Kafkaesque horror movie that makes a great double feature with Brazil. Not that these are necessarily unique takes, but I was just too dumb to realize them for too long.
The real trouble comes when you just can't accept a movie shooting for whatever absurd aim it is targetting. Like Ridley's Napoleon. It has way too much of a straight-faced hard-on for the English at the end there.
