pacinoyes - She is really getting the "Living Legend" narrative/treatment this awards season - I love it! Very well deserved. It's easy to forget how rich and varied her career has actually been (the list of directors she has worked with is crazy!) - she's one I think we tend to take for granted.

Is the fear of being second-best something that never truly leaves American actors, I wonder? Never truly leaves Americans in general, right?

ibbi - Girl, no. We stay embedded in your brains. Never forget they had to change the title of this movie from The Madness of George III because they thought Americans wouldn't go see it otherwise because they hadn't seen the first 2. And to get this back on topic, never forget how bootyful Moore was in Malle's superior play adaptation to film that same year.

Curious to see all of your nominations and wins for her? (Paging my fellow Julianne stan ibbi ) 1993: Supporting Actress, Short Cuts1994: Actress, Vanya on 42nd Street1995: Actress, Safe*1997: Supporting Actress, Boogie Nights* 1998: Supporting Actress, The Big Lebowski1999: Actress, The End of the Affair1999: Supporting Actress, Magnolia2002: Actress, Far from Heaven*2014: Actress, Still Alice2023: Actress, May December* (Awarded jointly with Natalie Portman ex aequo) So... That's 10 nominations and 4 wins for me. She'd be just outside of my lineups for An Ideal Husband, The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, Savage Grace, A Single Man, The Kids Are All Right, Maggie's Plan, and Gloria Bell, and two of her best performances, The Hours and Maps to the Stars, happened to be given in the same year as an even better performance of hers! Edit: Also, unrelated, but... Did you know Nicole Holofcener fired her from Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Edit: Also, unrelated, but... Did you know Nicole Holofcener fired her from Can You Ever Forgive Me? Yeah it's honestly quite unbelievable that Holofcener had the balls to fire one of the most accomplished actresses in business, though to be fair I do think that Moore is too hot to play a bitter and angry loser like Lee Israel. If you think about it, Moore has never deglammed herself in any role. Yeah she's played a porn star and Sarah Palin, but she still plays a pretty woman in those roles.

stabcaesar - I think most female pornstars and Sarah Palin are objectively attractive. But I agree that she's too pretty/glamorous for Lee Israel - and it's hard for me to imagine anyone other than McCarthy in that role, really. One role she did "de-glam" for is The English Teacher - a fun if totally slight movie. (Shoutout to sophiefox for the recommendation!)

I really think The End of the Affair is the most underrated of her films and performances (yes, even in spite of that well-deserved Oscar nomination). It's not generally mentioned when discussing her greatest works, and I think it should be! If you've never seen it, please do! If you have seen it, it's due for a re-watch, trust me.

Not that there is anything wrong with someone looking his/her own age, but... my god, this woman is stunning - it's truly hard to believe she is 63.

What do you think are her 10 most essential films? My ten fav films she's in..... Short Cuts The Big Lebowski Safe The Fugitive Cookie’s Fortune The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Vanya on 42nd Street Magnolia Children of Men Boogie Nights She's also clearly very good in Far From Heaven, The Kids Are All Right, Still Alice....... though a lot to be desired post-Oscar win tbh. She's so hilarious in her tv spots (30 Rock, Nightcap) but my fav recent perf is prob Maps to the Stars. Also I thought she was far better in When You Finish Saving the World than May December. Do you like Benny & Joon, mattsby? I'm surprised not to see it listed here!

Do you like Benny & Joon, mattsby? I'm surprised not to see it listed here! Yes, I like it a bit. When I was younger I used to dbl ft it with Don Juan DeMarco sometimes. Moore's casting is clever - she's the waitress who's a failed soap opera actress (*?) unless I'm misremembering. Of course by '93 she was a Daytime Emmy winner!
