She plays nearly every character the same way. The only time I've ever been hugely impressed with her performance was in I, Tonya. Every other performance pulls out that same hack accent, the same wide-eyed, maladjusted tone of performance. Like, her showings in Babylon and Suicide Squad are essentially separated by costume and makeup choices. She seldom shows subtlety, everything is always bombastic with her. She can act, she is more than serviceable in what she does, but that's it. IMO of course. Tear me apart.

I think her breakthrough performance in The Wolf of Wall Street was such a star-making turn that it's easy as a director to want her to do more of the same. Made her a natural fit for Harley Quinn (though the first Suicide Squad sucks ass) but too much in Babylon when Chazelle doesn't know how to modulate that kind of presence. But Robbie impresses most in things like Bombshell (where she and Theron's makeup are the only things I care to remember about the movie), Barbie, and the aforementioned I, Tonya. On a technical level, she's phenomenal and I think she's rarely a negative presence in any movie she's in.

I've said the basically same in a different thread. Everything's a riff on Harley Quinn with wide-eyed kooky hysterics which is enjoyable in some contexts and grating in others. She's been very successful in that lane but I'd like to see her land roles that allow her to branch out a bit more. Bombshell was her most nuanced perf and I'd like to see more lowkey, subtle work from her. She was the best thing about Amsterdam but no one could've turned out a great performance with that script...

She been subtle in smaller films but is just leaning into the roles that raise her profile and give her huge paydays.

I think she is absolutely capable of playing more distinct and subtle, and indeed I do prefer her when she isn't playing loud, bombastic roles because they've been getting increasingly same-y over the last little while.

Oh for sure, and I concur that not one of her performances has ever taken anything away from a movie, she's very solid in her schtick, but that's what it often is. She doesn't really disappear into a role much and as such it's hard to see her star stay as elevated as it is for the distant future. Now I appreciate these actresses are essentially the best in their field, but she's never going to be a Theron or Winslet if she doesn't challenge herself more. Maybe she's cool with that.

My "problem" with her is not necessarily range but depth - it seems to me that she's usually treading fairly shallow waters when it comes to her portrayals. And I'll be the first to admit that she does surfacy stuff very well. But her performances rarely give me a feeling of her tapping into the very core of her characters. But maybe she just hasn't been given that chance yet.

One performance of hers I've properly felt so far is (surprisingly for me) Barbie. But as far as the more surfacy ones go, I really loved her in The Wolf of Wall Street and Babylon. Yes, she's basically in one mode during those movies but in both cases she commits to the bit completely and fully.

I’ve often seen the “everything's a riff on Harley Quinn” criticism, but I’m curious - what are people referring to outside of Wolf of Wall Street and Babylon? I haven’t watched her in everything she’s done recently, but it feels like a bit of an overstatement to me, especially when she has performances like I, Tonya, Bombshell, and now Barbie on her resume...

She's also got Bombshell as the quiet small town girl in New York for the first time. But yes, I would like to see her do something more low key, like a realistic modern romantic drama. Still a promising talent which is why I actually want to see her do new stuff.
