Because I think there’s been some standout stuff this year so far.
Asteroid City - Alexandre Desplat Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - John Williams Oppenheimer - Ludwig Göransson Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse - Daniel Pemberton*** Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
If I didn’t disqualify it on the sheer number of Nintendo themes, The Super Mario Bros. Movie would also fit comfortably on this list.

only seen 36 so far and only a couple stand out. Asteroid City, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, Infinity Pool, and To Catch a Killer.
I could see Asteroid City make it to my top 5. Reminded me of his music for Moonrose Kingdom. Playful minimalism but hits hard when it needs to. The scene with Margot Robbie's character stands out for the effectiveness of Desplat's music despite it doing very little. But I also LOVE that tinkling piano in the main theme, at a constant simmer while everything slowly builds around it.

56 movies for me and I haven't heard one score I'd call noteworthy... even Spider-Verse (it's fine but it didn't stand out for me). Can't get on the Asteroid City bandwagon either - it's used like three times in the damn thing and it's the same twinkly Desplat muzak we've heard in all the other Anderson movies before, just even less noticeable.
So yeah, I'm waiting. I haven't seen Dial of Destiny and Oppenheimer yet so huge hopes for those. Maybe Elemental will surprise (will be watching it soon). But I'm mostly waiting for Joe Hisaishi to destroy the competiton with How Do You Live. Especially with Your Color (and therefore Kensuke Ushio's score) being postponed to 2024.

I don't do lineups this early, but scores I found notable this year so far:
Oppenheimer John Wick: Chapter 4 Infinity Pool M3GAN Marlowe Knock at the Cabin The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Well, very happy to report that I finally have one movie in my hopefully-soon-to-be lineup - Thomas Newman's work in (the wonderful) Elemental is a highly energetic delight which at times plays like his variation on a Bollywood (or Tollywood or Pollywood or whatever) type of a score and gives the movie a lot of color. And we're talking about a damn colorful movie here. Finally a score that stood out for me.

OST is always the last category I nail down. Sometimes a movie's music stands out instantly (Oppy) and sometimes you have to do a double or triple-take to hear what's going on, like Western Front last year.
clocking in at over 130 movies (with still some more to go yet), these are the ones I liked the most at first glance: Asteroid City - Alexandre Desplat The Boy and the Heron - Joe Hisaishi Elemental - Thomas Newman Monster - Ryuichi Sakamoto Oppenheimer - Ludwig Göransson Society of the Snow - Michael Giacchino Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Daniel Pemberton A Thousand and One - Gary Gunn
needs another take: Beau Is Afraid Dream Scenario How to Blow Up a Piepline Past Lives Saltburn To Catch a Killer

I don't want to post any tracks because the minimalist music is best experienced with the film, but Ryuichi Sakamoto's swan song score for Monster is breathtakingly beautiful. It was really sweet of Kore-eda to dedicate the film to Sakamoto's memory after finally getting to work with him.

The Boy and the Heron The Killer Killers of the Flower Moon Monster Oppenheimer***
Had Spider-Man on there for the longest but took it off because I think the score is too climatic for too much of the 3rd act, it's part of what hurts the pacing for me as it feels like every other scene is coming up on the end.

It's worth noting that there're only two new original pieces in the film though, the rest of the music being taken from Sakamoto's previous albums (as his health didn't allow him to write a full score). But it'd definitely be a great candidate for a "Best Use of Music" award or something along those lines.

My lineup looks like this now:
1. Oppenheimer 2. The Boy and the Heron 3. Elemental 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 5. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
But I've still got some stuff to see. Mainly anticipating Poor Things here.

Btw, the actual best score of 2023 might've been in Kore-eda's "Makanai" series (Yoko Kanno )

KotFM is more interesting than I thought. I didn't clock Robertson's music much at all on my viewing, it really blended into the mix. But pulling it up on Spotify, I appreciate his bluesy blend of guitar, harmonica and rhythmic drums to create a distinctly western sound. Has a lot of texture, and menace when it needs to. I'm not sure whether it's among my favorites but I do feel I misjudged it.

underrated score not being talked about: Robot Dreams by Alfonso de Vilallonga. Whimsical and playful piano melodies with a touch of jazz and hints of melancholy to compliment the fantastical 80s Manhattan setting. With no spoken dialogue, the music goes a long way toward keeping the movie sweet and entertaining and does an incredible amount of heavy lifting. Impossible to watch the movie and not dance around to the tunes.
the music also reminded me of old-school Snoopy cartoons (Snoopy Come Home anyone??) so there's an extra touch of nostalgia there.

this was one of my last 2023 movies on the docket. I know it's a bit polarizing but it's absolutely worth checking out for the art and music alone. The music blew me away. So full of feeling
