Damn, and right on the eve of his new film bowing at Venice, too. Go easy, you legend.

Not one of my fave directors but he made some great films - or films with some great parts to them often - and he really knew and understood film history........he had really bad personal relationships with the 2 best actors he ever worked with (Hackman & Pacino) - who loathed him in a way that was really nasty (at times) and vice versa........he had a very specific and unbending temperament........an unbelievable lineup of ex-wives Jeanne Moreau (!), Lesley Anne-Down among them
His autobiography is an essential movie book also ......

Damn RIP, Sorcerer is one of the greatest films of the New Hollywood era and the story behind why he made Cruising is crazy ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bateson). Still need to see To Live and Die in L.A. and Bug tho. Also his interview with Refn lmao

Damn, this hurts. Just recently I rewatched the magnificence that is Sorcerer (and watched that awesome Refn interview) and have been thinking about Friedkin ever since, planning to watch some stuff that I haven't seen (The Brink's Job, Jade). Farewell to a very special filmmaker.

What the hell? And he just made a new movie too? Wow, what a weird coincidence. What a great career, though. To Live and Die in L.A., Boys in the Band, The French Connection, The Exorcist, Killer Joe, that's enough of a great filmography, but he made so much more too. RIP!

Brilliant director with a unique voice. You could always tell you were watching a Friedkin joint and many of them were excellent. Rest in peace

Great director with a handful of legendary films. I think his last genuinely great movie was To Live And Die In LA in 1985 ( some may argue Killer Joe, but I don't see it as up there with his very best, and it feels more like Tracy Letts achievement, as he wrote the play the film was based on and the screenplay).
But when you got The French Connection, The Exorcist and Sorcerer to your name, you can peak in 1985 and still have a more notable career than 95% of directors who have ever done it.

RIP to a great and very versatile filmmaker who did several different genres.
In addition to the films already mentioned, one of the great basketball films of all time, Blue Chips, which he directed is a great addition to his filmography and deserves a shoutout. Great film about the inner workings and corruption within college basketball.

He was in my group of favorite filmmakers to watch talk about film (Peter Bogdanovich - who we lost last year - and Martin Scorsese are in it). And on top of his knowledge, the man was flat-out entertaining. I encourage people to look up his interviews.

One of the absolute best of the last 50 years. His mini-resurgence in the 00s after he seemed to have sunk into nothingness in the 90s was great to see. He got to put a twisted black bow on his directorial career, and the downright iconic interviews in the years since have added to his legacy beautifully in the age of social media and soundbites. What a legend.

What a legend. I still think Killer Joe is his best film, and I had long admired that he knew when to fold 'em and dipped out on a career peak like Lumet did. But he does have The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial premiering at Venice this year with Kiefer Sutherland and Lance Reddick, and considering the quality of the source material, maybe we have one more masterpiece to look forward to.

Thing I love about him is he had all this early Oscar success making genre films but clearly never gave a fuck about Oscars and continued making genre films.
