I'm a sucker for East Asian cinema, so I'm thinking that maybe I should get into some of their TV as well. I've seen a fair amount of anime, but nothing on the live-action side. I understand that a lot of K-dramas are popular internationally, and some J-dramas as well. Has anyone seen any of these? What would you recommend?

Well, the only east Asian shows I've seen are anime as well, with the one exception being Squid Game, which is kind of a gimme I suppose, but it might be a good place to start anyway, as its easily accessible with it being on Netflix.

I forgot Squid Game. Fun show, but very, very stupid. I did love the games though. That tug-of-war match was intense!

Netflix is a goldmine of kdrama and jdrama.
From recent years besides Squid Game - and Alice in Borderland which is very similar - My Name (2021) has a star performance from Han So-hee (who with Jeon Jong-seo are like the Leo/Joaquin of younger Korean actresses). It's also only 8 eps...... for some reason most East Asian series run around 12 eps, and the eps may run over an hour each, so I sometimes jump ship even if I kinda like what I've seen (for example, last year's Little Women series from Park Chan-wook's cowriter and crew).
For a non-crime, quintessential jdrama...... actually one of my fav first-watches of this year (even tho...it's very much a romcom soap opera)...... Long Vacation (1996) !!! The eps used to be on Youtube nicely upscaled but I can't find the link. But I'd be curious if you'd like that one, Martin.

I think I'll start with something high-octane, since I'm currently watching a calmer show (the anime Sound! Euphonium, which plays like a sports drama for music kids).

One episode of this was overlong, completely devoid of character development, needlessly ugly, and I already want everyone to die very violent, horrible deaths and the cute little lasers into people's skulls are not fulfilling the loathing I am feeling for each character in the show.

Fun show. It loses its way after the reveal - the ambiguity and mystery kept the tension just high enough to be enticing, and after the reveal it settles into a rather dull drama. My biggest problem is that this is a two hour movie stretched into seven hour series. The fight scenes are cool - and I appreciate that we have a full TV show of hand-to-hand fighting action - but they need to be used so much because there is no script. I'm glad I tried this though. Any other recommendations? I didn't like the first episode of Long Vacation.

You're a fan of Sion Sono right? You could try watching Tokyo Vampire Hotel, a mini-series he made that I enjoyed a lot and I'd rank just outside his top 5 works. I don't know how you'll feel about it though, as it's pretty messy and unhinged, at such a level that if I didn't know that Sono had created it, I would have sworn it was made by Takashi Miike.
