I think the problem with this new Indy not doing better (apart from the general wrongheadedness of it all) is not really about the audiences moving on and/or not caring about belated nostalgic sequels, 'cause they clearly do in some cases. It's that all of the above was already covered by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That WAS a belated nostalgic sequel which was released at that perfect time when a lot of folks could (and did) get exicted for a new Indiana Jones movie because they weren't yet too old for this shit. But for that belated sequel to receive its own belated sequel? Especially after KOTCS's (undeserved) reputation? That was a risky proposition in the first place, not to mention the movie's insane budget. I think that KOTCS fully quenched a of people's thirst for a new Indy flick. And in many cases it even spoiled the taste. I suppose this is why they aren't coming back in droves for this new one.

I still have no idea why they premiered it at Cannes.

I still have no idea why they premiered it at Cannes. Is it that weird though? Blockbusters are no strangers to Cannes - Maverick, Fast and Furious 9, Solo, etc. And of course 2008 saw not just Indy 4 but Kung Fu Panda premiere there too!

But the thing is, unless they were confident in its quality, they ran the risk of having a poorly-reviewed turkey that had months to build up bad press. And considering Crystal Skull got drubbed to hell and back, they probably should've held off on it even if it was quality.

I think this will always bother me most about Crystal Skull's existence - I've said numerous times that I like it quite a bit but Last Crusade ended on a truly perfect and a truly final note (which was absolutely intended by Spielberg to be so) which capped off a flawless trilogy. I know it's mainly Ford and Lucas that got the ball rolling on #4 but Sammy - sorry - Stevie should've been firmer about not doing it simply not to tamper with something that's been realised and finalised to such perfection.

One of my friends said it was the best example of why Steven should realize it’s ok to say no to your friends. EDIT: As much as I enjoy Crystal Skull, it’s a good example of why Steven doesn’t come back to franchises after Schindler’s List, and why he’s less passionate with repetition.

I mean he literally had his character riding off into the sunset with his father and friends with John Williams score. Perfect stamp on the franchise. Also on the note on Spielberg having a hard time saying no to his friends. Apparently he didn't want to do the nuke fridge scene in Crystal Skull but George talked him into it..so..yep

Can't say I'm surprised, there wasn't nearly the excitement for this that there for Crystal Skull. No Spielberg, Ford is legit elderly, and a lot of people didn't like Crystal Skull anyway. Went to a big theater near Battery Park that had sellouts for things like Batman and Elvis last year and the theater was half full so the numbers are not a surprise.

Yeah, I think it’s a combination of people still feeling burned by Crystal Skull and also finding the idea of an octogenarian Harrison Ford still playing Indiana Jones ridiculous, not realizing that the movie is specifically designed around his age and doesn’t ignore it like Crystal Skull did. Makes me wonder how the movie would have performed at the box office if it had been a straight reboot with a new actor in the role instead.

Who knew making a new movie about an 86 year-old for a franchise few gaf about would create one of the biggest box office bombs of all time lmao

Apparently the budget for this is $329m with an additional $100m for marketing. We're looking at one of the biggest bombs of all time.

Bob Iger when someone comes up to him at Disney headquarters with a new idea for the Indiana Jones franchise:

Despite the bad PR I think recasting with a younger actor playing him in the 30's again would have done better than this did.
