That subject is a NY Dolls reference - and the fact that I have to explain that makes me weep for you MAR Comedy seems dead ........but actually it is sort of back in 2023 - on TV and the movies - there's a good chance that a dark comic role wins the biggest female acting Emmy ( Ali Wong in Beef), Jennifer Lawrence has a bunch of good reviews in No Hard Feelings where she is pretty terrific imo playing what is essentially a screwball comedy with LOTS (too much maybe) of physical comedy and sex appeal .......maybe the best comedic actress going - Emma Stone - seems likely to be Oscar nodded for a very alternative horror comedy turn - Poor Things.....and then there's Margot Robbie in the comic parody Barbie which I guess could be a big deal ....... So who is so good at female comedy acting these days - among our current actresses - that it's scary (um, Emma Stone, below)? Any of the current actress who could be an all-timer in comedy like Diane Keaton or Madeline Kahn?

Emma Stone is up top. I think she'll further prove that with The Curse series and the plural Yorgos. Aubrey Plaza is bound to hit a hilarious home run. She's been excellent in dramatic leading roles... she needs to find a big part in a funny thing. I'm pretty sure she's lining up to star in John Waters next Liarmouth which seems like a wild, iconic role. Jennifer Lawrence is in the convo now for No Hard Feelings - tho that role asks her to be temperate and a little gloomy between the bigger comedic scenes. (I didn't feel the movie went all the way in the genre as it could've.) She doesn't have much else... Don't Look Up was dire. Actually she's hysterical in American Hustle! Two who have untapped potential.... Nina Arianda has the chops but I admit, I see her more as a star supporting player. and Samara Weaving who I think is much more naturally funny than her often-compared-to Margot Robbie. I think Weaving could ace a big comedy lead. Important shout out to Camille Cottin - of course. Already with an all-timer perf in Call My Agent. She's slowly breaking into English language works but she's wayyyy better than the small roles she's getting. She has a similar charm to Diane Keaton... She'd be wonderful in a Woody Allen btw. And she has undaunted slapstick ability... (the famous Connasse series). Also looking forward to Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan peddling their wares in Drive-Away Dolls.

Yeah, Stone is definitely the zenith for me. She can do it all and has the broadest scope and versatility within the milieu.
Lawrence has natural comedic chops and an easygoing vibe to her, but I would say Stone is more skilled at the moment in that department.
I actually think Robbie's kinda overrated in this department -- she's brilliant in I, Tonya but I find her Harley Quinn to be tiresome after a while, and that same vibe really gassed me out in an otherwise sensational film in Babylon. I can see the appeal, but it's not my thing.

The French actresses are deep in this regard too - I have said that Lea Seydoux gave maybe my favorite recent comic performance in the movie France (2021),- she's great at it imo - Stone level actually ........... there's 2 all-timers in Call My Agent - Cottin and Laure Calamy ..........I also loved the way Haenel fit her way into Deerskin which is a kind of comic acting too opposite an inspired and distinctly great Dujardin......

No mention yet of Melissa McCarthy? Her physical comedy is broad, for sure, but I love how she anchors it with character. I still think The Heat (2013) is her best! Edit: pacinoyes - Do you dislike McCarthy?

Edit: pacinoyes - Do you dislike McCarthy? No, I like her fine but when I made the thread I took her as a given......not sure where her career is atm and I was thinking more in that Aubrey Plaza / Emma Stone sense of current big deals who incorporate it in the last few years .........but McCarthy definitely fits Surprised no one has mentioned Rachel McAdams who is great at comedy and often willing to look quite ridiculous which certainly helps........she is a great sport when she could have had a different career trading on her looks....she's goofy in the best sense

pacinoyes - Oops... Sorry I misunderstood! I guess Coolidge wouldn't really apply here, either, then. Let me see... Not to beat a dead horse or anything, as we all know there's nothing she can't do, but... I think Jodie Comer is really funny! She absolutely nailed the comedic beats in Killing Eve and Prima Facie.

I am not sure another actress would have found the irony (and ironic humor) in her Prima Facie line readings - I think the amount of information she's conveying would have resulted in screeching performances by most actresses..........the whole way she arc'd that character - is amazing and it opened up so many things .......including some bitter humor especially.......
