Was a ton of fun. Better than the reviews it's gotten. Some memorable moments here, and some stuff I think I might go back to in reference. "YOUR UBERS HERE. 5 HOUR RIDE TO PRINCETON ON THE WAY."
Jennifer always has something to offer. My favorite performance of hers since Joy. Maybe she wont be nominated because of how the movie she's in is gonna be perceived, but I would not complain at all if she makes the final 5. I like her here more than her Oscar win.

Wrong Jennifer in the thread title... Doing this as a MILF thing with JLO would have been an interesting alternative......

Nope, based on a true story. I actually thought of Failure to Launch, with Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Wish this Buick commercial had more meat but its mostly fun thanks to a stellar Jennifer Lawrence and some crude yet funny jokes.

R-rated sex comedies are back, baby. All hail Jennifer Lawrence.

It's a pretty funny movie but what shocked me the most is that I actually responded to non-humorous scenes too although it's usually during them that such comedies start to lose me. To my own surprise, I found myself invested in these two people and whatever "journeys" they had to go through to get to a better place in life. Instead of being a silly setpieces movie with some perfunctory character stuff thrown in to create a phony emotional connection with the audience, this ended up a character movie with a bunch of silly setpieces thrown in to keep up the funny meter going. And to me the filmmakers pulled off both the relationships and the jokes which is something I really didn't expect from this.
Of course whether you end up invested in these people or not largely depends on the two central performances and I thought both of the actors did a fantastic job. Jennifer Lawrence is just utterly fantastic, and it's not just the comedy. Hell, they give her a goddamn Oscar clip in this movie (the "Maneater" reaction) and it's there that you realize that this project isn't just vaudeville or goofing around on camera for her - she treats the performance as seriously as something like Causeway and it just so happens that she's required to be goddamn hilarious in most of it. And I gotta commend her for that nude scene too, and not for "OMG JLaw hot" reasons (although that's what time it is too). I may be mistaken but when I think of these female-led "raunchy" comedies, I can't remember the actresses actually going there (I believe most of them specifically had no-nudity clauses in their contracts) but Lawrence doesn't just go "Fuck it, I'm all in for this movie" but does it in a completely comedic context which I find truly admirable. It's not a "I'll show y'all how great I look" moment, it's a "I'll show y'all how much I can laugh at myself" moment which seems completely free of Hollywood vanity to me. You don't really see a lot of performers doing that and I think it should be acknowledged.
But what really surprised me is that Andrew Barth Feldman managed to totally find his footing too, becoming an equal comedic/dramatic partner to Lawrence. This could've easily been a case of a seasoned actor overpowering a green newcomer but Feldman held his own like a pro. Look, it's not a great movie or anything but these two simply make. it. work.

I know that Margot Robbie is the frontrunner for the Comedy Globe, but frankly, Lawrence deserves it by a mile in my estimation. I agree 100% with everything you wrote, especially in regards to Lawrence's capacity to poke fun at herself. I remember how everyone called her fake and phony for her antics like falling on the steps when accepting her Oscar, but the girl's just a brassy delight and doesn't turn it off for anyone. She's who she is, and I love that.

Lawrence deserved a better script. The dramatic moments almost always work, but the comedy is so telegraphed that not even Lawrence giving it her all - both in desperate (but failed) attempts to get laughs and her excellent dramatic moments - can salvage it. It's raunchy without any actual humor to speak of.

It's raunchy without any actual humor to speak of. The kidnapping misunderstanding was the funniest part of the movie and nothing reached that high. There were also certain parts where everyone was shockingly amateur. The first scene with Lawrence, Broderick, and Benanti was AWFUL and poorly acted. Weird bc JLaw is naturally funny but yeah...

Funniest part was "In three years, we'll both be seniors." An actually clever line that could have been part of a whole conversation of veiled barbs. Instead, we got "Can I touch your weiner?"

Jlaw isn't in the news or have much in the pipeline to be talked about frequently anymore.

I'm in the minority here, but I have a different mentality. I don't just forget their previous work, or heyday, just because they went away from the picture a bit. Every one else here seems to adopt the short term memory approach, however. Also.... have you seen some of the stuff Lawrence has lined up? If they all materialize, she has movies (potentially) with Lynne Ramsey, Paolo Sorrentino (2), and Luca Guadagnino.

Okay, but are there any good directors she has in the pipeline? Well.... Lynne Ramsey directed the British classic Ratcatcher (has a small cult among Brit centric viewers). She directed Samantha Morton to one of her better performances, and Tilda Swinton too. Luca Guadagnino is also a frequent collaborator of Swinton. Maybe Swinton makes him better than what he is, but actors seem impressed by him...... because they think they can knock the role out of the park in his movies. Paolo Sorrentino.... I haven't seen a lot from him, but I thought The Great Beauty was pretty good.

She's not as "polarizing" on here like she was on OB
Yes I've heard of those projects but it seems like nothing has materialized. I'm rooting for her bc she needs to get back to giving incredible performances like she did in Winter's Bone

I felt she lost her way in studio fare. Winter's Bone and Causeway were great low-key performances (both are my favorite lead actress perfs of their years), which is what she does best. NHF is maybe the only time I've liked her outside of her limited specialty - she had a lot of fire here, but she was forced to make something from nothing.
