Lets talk about the 75th annual Emmy Awards. Nominations will be announced on July 12th. I want to get the ball rolling with Best Comedy Series. Which 8 shows do you believe will get nominated?
To recap the 2023 precursor awards: Abbott Elementary (Season 2) took home the Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Ensemble trophies. The Bear (Season 1) won 4 major Guild awards -- PGA, SAG Actor, WGA, and ACE. Only Murders in the Building (Season 2) scored PGA, WGA, ACE, and 4 SAG nominations. Atlanta (ACE), Dead to Me (SAG Actress), Reservation Dogs (WGA), Wednesday (SAG Actress, DGA), and What We Do in the Shadows (WGA) received at least one major Guild nomination.
The latest seasons of Barry, The Great, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Ted Lasso premiered after the Globe, Critics Choice, and Guild awards. We don't know how they would have fared against the mighty Abbott and The Bear. We know that Season 3 of Barry did win the DGA this year, but we do not know how Season 4 would have played out this calendar year. The new 2023 shows Poker Face (Peacock/Rian Johnson) and Shrinking (Apple/Bill Lawrence/Brett Goldstein) seem to be very popular and will be eligible for this year's Emmy awards.
8 of the 14 shows mentioned above were previously nominated for best comedy series: Atlanta (2/3 seasons), Abbott Elementary, Barry (3/3 seasons), Dead to Me (1/2), Only Murders, Mrs. Maisel (4/4 seasons), Ted Lasso (2/2 seasons), and What We Do in the Shadows (2/3 seasons).
Ted Lasso won best comedy series in 2022 and 2021. Mrs. Maisel won it in 2018.
The Great was nominated for directing and writing for season 1, and then Actor and Actress for season 2. This might be the year, it finally breaks through the glass.

1. Ted Lasso 2. Abbott 3. The Bear 4. Only Murders 5. Barry 6. Wednesday 7. Mrs. Maisel 8. What We Do in the Shadows (I bet against it every year and it keeps slipping through, and S4 was the best it's been since S1)
my spoilers are Shrinking and Reservation Dogs. Can't comment on Shrinking because I haven't seen it but it has the star power to grab their attention. Reservation Dogs would be a strong bet provided any of the voters watched it (which they probably haven't). I think The Great just doesn't seem buzzy enough. Season 2 had some big misses in a weak Emmy season (nothing for Gillian Anderson was crazy).

The next two I am not. Emmy voters could very well for go for Poker Face and Shrinking (fresh new shows with name brand creators and cast) or they could with their "greatest hits" with Atlanta or Shadows. I went with Wednesday and Shrinking. I feel that Netflix productions typically get at least one show in the best series category. Shrinking is my "gutsy pick" -- it's their type of humor and has a serious message.
I am hesitant on Poker Face, because it is a Peacock Production. They have never been nominated for best series before.

Wednesday will probably make it. How about the others? Do you have Ted Lasso, Abbott, Bear, Barry, Maisel, and Murders in there? I am more and more confident with Wednesday. Going to roll the dice with Shrinking. Shadows feels very reasonable too.

given how viral Wednesday was last Christmas and how Ortega absolutely dominated that performance and the pop culture zeitgeist, it missing would feel like a significant snub. I'd also expect it to get writing and/or Tim Burton directing nods because it was honestly a return to form for him. Maybe even Emma Myers could slip into supporting, and this is more unlikely but I have fingers crossed that after a decade's worth of scene-stealing guest spots Fred Armisen can finally land a guest Emmy nod.

Question for the group: I am hearing great things about Jury Duty. Could this be a spoiler?
