Was not expecting Rocket to have a full-blown character arc at this point. He was the emotional core of the film. Even Star-Lord got a little sidelined for Rocket's sake. A little disjointed as a whole but pretty good in parts. Some of the emotions really worked and some felt forced. The ending was tastefully done and i felt the gravitas of the situation and the weightage of the word "family". Guardians are a really nice group.
On the flip side, i didn't the like villain. He looked promising at start but in the end he was disposable. Will Poulter as Adam Warlock felt shoehorned in and didn't feel like he belonged in this film- 7/10

Not a fan of movies with those elements.

Best Marvel movie in a long time. It's really Rocket's movie. I also enjoyed the villain.

Really good and miles better than Ant-man 3. Rockets arc and origin story was really well don’t and emotional. Satisfying enough ending overall. Agree the could have just cut Adam Warlock or find a better way to incorporate him. Villain was very good.

I loved this, and if it's the last MCU movie I bother watching for a while (maybe ever), I'll have gone out on a high note. Gunn's affinity for these characters has paid off wonderfully yet again, giving them a heartfelt and emotional sendoff that felt earned in every way. I love how it curtails the usual expanded universe trappings and is content to tell a self-contained story- anything else would've rang hollow and false. Also has one of the best endings in recent memory. I expect "Dog Days Are Over" to have a serious resurgence.

Yeah, this is growing on me. I really loved this.
The one thing I could have done without was Adam. Poulter acquits himself well to the humor, but Adam feels like a holdover from another draft that just lingered, and kind of clashes with the rest of it.
Otherwise, dug the hell out of it. Surprisingly deep character moments (as we’ve all said, Rocket’s the star), phenomenal chemistry between the cast, so much vivid imagination and color, great action, side-splitting humor, the music choices are superb, and I actually really liked HE as a villain here (if he’s not deep, I still enjoy having a villain I love to hate).
THIS is how we should have opened Phase 5.

This is probably my favorite Marvel movie since Spider-Man No Way Home.
James Gunn does a great job balancing multiple characters and giving each of them their own moments to shine. It was a great send off and I can't wait to see what Gunn does with DC next.

Got around to seeing this yesterday and it was solid again, maybe a little better than the first and not quite as good as the second. As with the others Gunn's gonzo sense of humor and the chemistry between the cast elevate it from being a generic Star Wars knockoff (but the second one felt like Star Trek TOS to me which is why it's better). Also a lot more visually interesting than other MCU movies, we're already talking about the makeup in the news thread for this and I loved that Fantastic Voyage homage retro spaceship they were on in the middle. Needed more Elizabeth Debicki though. She only has like 3 scenes, was hoping they'd let her go all out and give a femme Bond villain performance. Not sure I needed Rocket Raccoon to be "explained" either, the joke was that there was a talking raccoon in space for no reason and everyone acted like it was totally normal. A 6/10 for me. Fun summer movie but doubt I'll ever bother to rewatch. Was not expecting Rocket to have a full-blown character arc at this point. He was the emotional core of the film. Not a fan of movies with those elements. That stuff is off screen but I was surprised by how violent this was. The creature violence is very bloody and at one point you effectively watched a guy's face get skinned. People are so desensitized to movie violence now, seems like if this came out 15 years ago it gets an R. Which would have been a bonus since we wouldn't have had to hear Star Lord say "frickin" like 5 or 6 separate times.

Just dropping in to join the general consensus here, and say that the villain was really good.

Could have sword Tony Stark used it at least once, I have a memory of him doing it in one of the Avengers movies and the audience cheering but maybe people just talked about it and it didn't happen. Mandela Effect.

Doesn't top the first one, but it's better than Vol. 2, which was more uneven and felt somewhat aimless to me. Better performance from Pratt here too, whereas in Vol. 2 it seemed more like he was phoning it in a bit. Not all the humor landed for me this time, but enough of it did, so still solid overall with a pretty good villain turn by Chukwudi Iwuji. Bonus points for using Flaming Lips... also features The Replacements' "I Will Dare." pacinoyes Mattsby

Vol. II is still probably my favorite "awesome mix" because it felt like an actual mixtape someone would have had in the 70's full of deep cuts and corny dated stuff to go along with the actual great songs. First one felt more like a greatest hits radio station.

I liked it but to me it's not a full-on triumph. For his (presumably) last MCU ride Gunn creates this weird, bulky concoction in which he throws together syrupy sentiment, kindergarten humor, surprising brutality, horror-type grotesquery, sci-fi action and entertaining worldbuilding, and proceeds to try to mix all of that up to form a semi-cohesive narrative... and while I don't think he's entirely successful at doing that, the sheer amount of tones and types of movie this project stores within itself is kind of interesting. While I did find the plot mechanics to be a bit too mechanical (a lot of the movie is "we need to go here to do this, we need to go there to find that"), it worked for me on levels of excitement and emotion, even if the latter was often squeezed out of me in the cheapest ways imaginable. I also really appreciated the film's commitment to showcasing its vivid production design and makeup effects - whenever you're tired of what's unfurling in any given scene, you can just look around and focus your attention on the details of the sets or the fun creatures the movie's filled with. I guess I would've adored the movie if I'd been more invested in the Guardians in general but I just like them, nothing more than that. But even with that in mind, it's a good send-off to these characters. Speaking of send-offs: I love how the movie pushes the "don't be cruel to animals" message all the way through only for it to literally end with the new Guardians getting ready to fucking slaughter a bunch of space goats or whatever they were. And a ton of those robo-animals was killed by our heroes in the climactic fight too. Don't be cruel to animals! ...unless they're henchman animals, I guess

Just finished the film last night. It's good, but I do feel the Marvel Universe has worn itself out. Nothing really feels fresh or original anymore. The makeup and the special effects were the stars of the film. I have to applaud Gunn for once again, tackling another emotional topic with great touch: animal torture and society turning a blind eye. Volume One is easily the best one. Volume Two & Three are quality films, but can't say there were on the same level as the original.
