I mean...how many goat heads and sigils of Baphomet should it take to conjure up her first elusive win? In all seriousness, to quote this undeniably brilliant actress, "not winning does not define" her. And to quote myself, "I've never had a sore throat." Also, if a similar thread's already been posted, my apologies; I could only find one ranking her nominations alongside her competitors those years... Doubt The Master American Hustle Junebug The Fighter Vice
Conflicted with my ranking here because the Academy seems janky with what they deem "nomination worthy" for her (Arrival? Where? And why not?) so all of these sans Vice can wiggle around. Begin...

Lol.
1. The Master - My win and one of the best performances in a PTA movie (though there are like a good dozen great ones on the same level)
2. Arrival 2. Junebug - Best out of the nominees. 3. The Fighter - Much stronger than Melissa Leo imo. 4. Doubt - MVP of the film. 5. American Hustle - MVP of the film (in which everyone else pretty much sucks balls). 6. Vice
The first 4 are all great and deserving nominations. American Hustle is not her best work but is way overhated. Vice is the only nomination of hers I kind of dislike, but I blame Adam McKay.

Junebug The Master Doubt The Fighter American Hustle Vice
She'd be my win for the top two, think she's nom-worthy for the next two, and think the bottom two are decent work but not worthy. I myself would nominate her for Catch Me If You Can (where she'd probably be my win), Enchanted, and Arrival.

Junebug
Enchanted
The Master Doubt The Fighter
Arrival
Vice American Hustle
If it was up to me she would have Oscars for the first two but after that goes downhill pretty quickly, Doubt is a safe casting - safe performance scenario, I used to loved her in The Fighter but 12 years later I think the actors I thought where sponsored by a cocktail of red bull and cocaine are actually pretty fantastic (Bale, Leo, the sisters...), Vice seems too cartoonish a version of The Master and for long scenes she's just standing there with that ridiculous wig and American Hustle remains an abomination for everyone involved.

I wish Amy actually did have that many nods 1. Doubt 2. The Master 3. Junebug 4. The Fighter 5. Vice 6. American Hustle The first three are all all timers in the category for me, she's good in The Fighter and Vice too despite Vice not being a very good movie. American Hustle is really the only dubious one and she got robbed for Arrival so it evens out. One of the most consistently good actresses of the last 20 years and appears to be a nice person so I don't know where the haterade on here comes from.

1. Junebug - Felt really fresh in 2005. But when you look at it in 2023, it's among the only few mainstream female performances that year even worth remembering. Joan Allen - Upside of Anger, Gong Li - Memoirs of a Geisha, Rachel Weisz - The Constant Gardener, and Im sure Im just not remembering a few others, but I think that about says it all - that we can go back to the origins of Amy Adams, where she was pretty much at her best form here.
2. The Fighter - Loved her. Uniformly strong cast, Bale even better.... and Leo I can see why she won. Only one who was basically himself was Wahlberg. A good role and a strong performance - it's the most effort she's ever put in a role.
3. The Master - A component, but a strong component. Again a strong cast and it seemed like she does the best when she's around people putting in the same effort she puts.
4. American Hustle - A bizarrely hated entertaining performance. I thought she did what was asked..... which was a kind of mockumentary comedy kinda thing, but she would probably miss my top 5 because there were too many other performances that year that went unrecognized.
5. Doubt - Not a huge fan, but I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that people weren't really prepared in 2008, where previous to that.... all we had to go by was Junebug Amy Adams and Enchanted Amy Adams, and those were pretty different so I guess people saw the night and day and just felt overall mild here.
6. Vice - Remember nothing. I guess that says all. A make-up nomination for that Arrival snub.
And like a lot of people are saying....we like to pretend those Enchanted and Arrival nominations actually happened. I'd also say that if Nocturnal Animals was directed by an actual director, she had a chance to really give a possibly career changing performance. Because those kinda roles puts Amy at her best. Movie went downhill fast after the first 40 minutes, and that precipitous drop sucked the life out of anything interesting, and at that point it was a movie that no actor could've really saved.... despite the fact that it had Linney and Gyllenhaal - typically people who can save a bad movie.

1. The Master. Easily one of her best performances, and a perfect subversion of her normal screen presence. She perfectly exudes the cold power-behind-the-throne Lady Macbeth vibe.
2. Junebug. Would've made a very worthy winner in that category that year, and a really terrific breakthrough for her.
3. Doubt. Honestly, I think she's the only one of the quartet who's actually good and not trying to mug for Oscars with every single moment of screentime. It's effortless work.
4. Vice. I mean, at this point, this is where the performances go off the rails. She's competent here. Nothing noteworthy at all. This nomination is only because of name recognition, not because of merit of what she's doing on screen. I find it very difficult to reconcile this with what she does in The Master because the blueprint is there to play a variation on Peggy here, but Adam McKay is no PTA.
5. The Fighter. Miscast beyond belief. I genuinely can't wrap my heads around anyone who thought she was better than Melissa Leo in this movie, and those who thought she should've won for it. There's no chemistry with Wahlberg and she comes off as such a poseur in this movie.
6. American Hustle. One of the very worst nominated performances of any category. She gave a monumental performance just three years later for Arrival but I was fine with her snub because she got unfairly lauded for this piece of shit and it balanced the cosmic scales.

I myself would nominate her for Catch Me If You Can (where she'd probably be my win), Enchanted, and Arrival. Might be controversial, but I personally would've swapped Latifah out (who I feel booked a first class seat on Chicago's hype gravy train that year, destination unnecessary nomination) for Ms. Adams...

Lol, they all kind of blur together now. I find her consistent and I actually think I rate all of the below relatively the same (in terms of Amy's performance). The bottom of the list is maybe Vice, and I haven't seen The Fighter.
Probably something like:
Doubt | The Master American Hustle | Junebug (tbh this is very close to the ones above, but i rank AH far more favorably than others here and I think Adams and Bale made that movie)
Vice
NS: The Fighter

Junebug (jumping off a skyscraper) The Fighter The Master
Doubt
I think her career now finally matches her level of talent, i.e., not amazing.

Lol, they all kind of blur together now. Right? I'm waiting for the Academy to spice it up a bit and finally chuck her a bone out of left field for something silly like Nightbitch as a career win...

American Hustle The Fighter Doubt The Master Vice
N/S Junebug (which I've heard is the best of the bunch).
Wouldn't nom any of those I've seen. I do give her double nominations in lead in 2016 for Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, the only times I've been impressed by her and of course she was snubbed there. I still thank the Lord she was ignored for Hillbilly Elegy.
