Are these movie stars fading away, in terms of status, draw, and box office appeal??
(The only movie stars that are still standing for me right now are two or three:
1. Leonardo DiCaprio
2. Tom Cruise
3. Denzel Washington* (Despite Little Things and Macbeth were failures not seen by the public, the jury is still out for the future commercial performance of The Equalizer 3)
And who do you think among these actors i mentioned, is fading away??
I'll name them:
1.Johnny Depp (59 years)
Hasn't headlined a film since 2020, which no one saw.
To be determined if he still has draw among the general audiences and box office appeal after the defamation he won against Heard, or if he's back as Jack Sparrow in the Disney Franchise.
2. Tom Hanks (66 years)
Elvis was a hit, but he was a supporting role in a movie which is basically Austin Butler's show, and he's not even getting any notice or awards consideration.
His latest films aside from Elvis were all avoided and completely unseen by the public or the industry: Greyhound, News From The World, Finch, and Pinocchio. His upcoming projects are A Man Called Otto (Underpublicized, but may be a moderate box office surprise),Asteroid City (Wes Anderson ensemble movies rarely make money),and Here (Another Zemeckis project, and Zemeckis these days is more of a miss than a hit)
He's nearing 70, is he fading away?
3. George Clooney (61 years)
After four years since the very underwhelming commercial performance of Money Monster, he came back to act with a movie he directed no one saw or remembers: The Midnight Sky, then he directed another movie no one saw or remembers: The Tender Bar, despite having one of Affleck's best performances.
He may have rebounded a bit recently with Ticket to Paradise, a PG-13 mid range budget romantic comedy with Julia Roberts, which was a huge success.
But has his movie star status been hopelessly hindered for adult dramas, blockbusters, etc..??
4. Matt Damon (53 years)
2021 has been brutal for him, Stillwater and The Last Duel, both failures, and the latter was critically praised for Ben Affleck, Jodie Comer, and Adam Driver, he was the least worthy performance.
He'll be seen next in Oppenheimer, but he's hardly the main focus, even in the trailer.
All the attention is in the fact that it's a Nolan film headlined by Cillian Murphy, and Downey Jr may be the main supporting character.
His days as action movie star seem to be over, maybe he's looking for a swansong as the main lead?
5. Robert Downey Jr. (57 years)
After his incredible eleven year old run as Iron Man and unprecedented box office success with the MCU, which culminated with the record breaking Endgame, his successful 2010 comedy Due Date, and the Sherlock Holmes franchise, RDJ flopped with Dolittle, his film after Endgame, but i would say that among the other actors i mentioned, he's probably the least damaged in terms of movie star status.
Oppenheimer is next and unlike Damon, he may have a relevant and praiseworthy part acting wise in it, and a third Sherlock Holmes film may still happen.
6. Brad Pitt (59 years)
This is the one i struggle with the most, especially with Babylon flopping hard this recent weekend. Bullet Train was a decent hit, and 2019 has been an year or rebirth for him, with OUATIH being a hit, winning an Oscar for it, and Ad Astra, for which he didn't fill many seats, but considering the niche nature of the film, it and his performance being critically praised, it's not something damning career wise, especially for a movie icon like him.
Maybe he's not the draw he was anymore in the 90s and 00s, but i think he has still movie star power for someone who is nearing 60 years old.
That Formula One project with Kosinski is appealing and maybe that project with Clooney and Jon Watts will happen.
Among these options he's certainly the "least likely to be dumped by Hollywood and easily the one with more clout and status.
What do you think about my analysis?
Any other big name actors i left?
Thoughts??
