An award given to actors at the end of their careers, so I can see why they would give it to her now.

That's nice! Almost as important as having the most individual performances mentioned during the voting for the MAR's Top 100 Performances of the 2000s poll

I wouldn't call her GOAT or even top 30-ish, but she's one my semi-favorites so I don't mind Kidmaniacs. That being said, it is an honor for her and fans. I assume Tom Cruise won't be there, will he?

Kidman becomes the 2nd youngest actress to recieve the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award at 55 years old ( Meryl Streep was the youngest when she got it aged 54) and is the 11th woman (all actresses) to recieve the award.

Well all that's definitely true ^ .........heck I wouldn't even call her the greatest in her age range from Australia either ...........but I will say she's getting a bit screwed over this year where she was straight up terrifying in her best recent performance imo in (the overrated, to me) The Northman and which seems to have utterly disappeared from top line awards discussion despite many people loving it (?) - she was better there and more deserving of an Oscar nod in The Northman than she was in all of Being The Ricardos to me..... It's funny how things work out often like this in Hollywood - Kidman gets the AFI, the same year that Cruise has a major career triumph and Kidman's most obvious "rival" gives an all-timer performance (Blanchett) ..... Also, AFI has a lot of female potential awardees to still catch up on too : Spacek, Weaver, Close, Lange, Burstyn, McDormand etc.

Weird to award Kidman (who I definitely admire) before someone like Ellen Burstyn, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren etc. but good for her.

Man, they awarded George Clooney and not these actresses you mentioned, or Redford, Hackman, Coppola, etc.. These stuff are not so serious and important like they want it to appear.

It's a nice show and a nice party but .........they are not serious or important ..........at all

Steve Martin is a comedy legend, Oscars or not, no issue with that.
My issue is with Clooney getting AFI Lifetime Achievement Award and Kennedy Honors.
Insane how much he gets rewarded compared to his actual body of work.

People are allowed to turn down the award. It's like a knighthood or a damehood. Most people know it's prestigious, but some simply don't want it ( like Albert Finney and Peter 'O Toole, who turned down knighthoods and Vanessa Redgrave, who turned down a Damehood). Hackman and Redford were offered the AFI, and turned it down, as is their right. I would have waited longer to give it to Clooney, but he's easily an iconic enough star to be a worthy recipient. If you run down the list of winners, it's an iconic and exclusive list of some of the most important figures in film history. The award is as important as it advertises itself to be.

If I was part of this exclusive group as an actor or director, I'd be cheesing from ear to ear. Only 49 people have ever won it. It's way harder to get this than an Oscar. I guess it's a legacy thing. You can win an Oscar and still be forgotten. Nobody who gets this will be forgotten, because the impact they made on the American Film industry was too significant. The award acknowledges that impact. And that includes George Clooney or Steve Martin or anyone else you might not have wanted to get it.
The fact that John Williams, as a composer got this award in 2016, when the award almost always goes to actors or directors, is a remarkable testament to Williams impact and legacy within the American Film Industry. It matters a great deal, imho.

Amazing speech by Meryl Streep as she presents Nicole Kidman with her AFI Lifetime Achievement Award. At one point, Streep pretty much says the hardest thing about being called the "greatest actress of all-time" , is acting opposite someone as great as Kidman, and sort of questioning her own talent, because she realises Kidman can do things she can't. I feel like that's as close as Streep is ever going to come to saying another actress is not only on her level, but maybe even more talented than her. But Clayton Davis was correct in how he phrased it. GOAT Honors GOAT.
