He's been on my mind lately because I saw him be pretty greatish - or at least be THE star of the show - in The Piano Lesson - but I could easily see him getting a Tony nomination, a win (not kidding, it's possible) or being totally passed over - mostly because of the dates of the show and his category placement - probably lead........ which doesn't help him. On film - I have never seen him be that good - and he's gotten some plum roles - on paper- I didn't really "get" Tenet (it was like a big thrill ride that I enjoyed on that level - not as a "film" exactly), ok in Blackkklansman (quite dislike the film, its BS ending, and often - its director - thx4asking) he was best in Malcolm & Marie which was headache inducing unfortunately - but his performance in "Malcolm....." was closest in style to The Piano Lesson..... Beckett was pretty awfu l.........Amsterdam apparently is awful - no plans to see it tbh ............but no one "blames" him certainly for that....... I think in some ways he's a less skilled or less disciplined Bradley Cooper who gave his best performance on stage too (The Elephant Man) but who has become better and more assure imo on film since that stage performance - and Cooper had a pretty marvelous 2021. The difference is Cooper did theater and this is JDW's stage debut afaik - and he's younger....
Washington seems to have 2 modes - sleepy or haywire (he's quite animated in The Piano Lesson) - The Piano Lesson will be filmed where he might measure that performance more and make it truly something. How do you rate him so far? Also let's not compare him to his Pops - Dad is a singular, rare case - in a pretty rare class too - which isn't the Mount Rushmore Class of DePac, Nicholson, or Hoffman (or Hackman and some others) - as was mentioned (wrongly) on MAR recently.........however do you think they should team up soon............. or just wait on that - maybe after The Piano Lesson? Is there anyone who thinks they shouldn't team up?

The only thing he's really impressed me in was Malcolm & Marie.I thought he was terrific in that. His other performances have felt pretty inert and he doesn't have the kind of effortless charisma that his Dad possesses(sorry,it's hard not to compare the two). That being said,it's still early on in his career and I think he will grow as an actor.

I do think that he's got charisma and an ease on-screen that makes him very watchable. I think he's really good in BlacKkKlansman, but everything I've seen that he's done after that hasn't really landed with me. Tenet is not exactly an actor's showcase and Pattinson is really the one who comes away from that film succeeding to make a mark, but Washington doesn't acquit himself poorly in any way. Malcolm & Marie was intolerable to watch but I chalk that up more to Levinson than to either of the leads. I didn't see Beckett and I'll be torrenting Amsterdam like any patriot would.
Ultimately, I think Washington's off to a promising start but these next five years are critical.

I could be wrong but I think JD is holding back a little. Sounds silly I know but the first time I saw him on screen ( Ballers) had no clue he was Denzel's son and he had a lot of charisma.

I like him, yeah he could probably stand to be a bit more selective with his roles, but I do think a director could tape into his potential. I thought he was good in Beckett & BlacKKKlansman, and he worked just fine for "the protagonist" role in Tenet.

He's got some talent, but I think he's limiting himself in his role selection lately which have relied on him being more stately but have come across at times as inert. I'd like to see him take on a wacky character actor supporting role to get a bit more of his adventurous side.

He's fine. Never understood where this "He can't act" stuff was coming from. He's better than Zendaya in Malcolm and Marie, dealing with reams of dialogue, and she's a wonderful actress (at least in Euphoria).

Mostly strong reviews for his performance - the NYT called him "feverish" which is pretty accurate in that it seems the play's events are eating him up inside and pouring out of him.......looking quite good for a Tony nod and maybe a win (the Tony's are a bit of a joke nowadays and you can easily steal or buy a Tony since the early 90s tbh) - depending how the field looks and if they can settle on a category ........and make up for the "weak" opening dates
Really curious to see how a film translates of this, whether someone else directs and how he modifies his performance on the big screen. His Dad gave almost the exact same performance in the film of Fences, that he did in the stage version (I don't think anyone here saw him in both besides me?) but that probably won't work for JDW because he drives the play with energy - in a movie the same exact performance would seem too high pitched......but if he can modulate it and then ramp it up, he may even have a better shot at an Oscar win than he does a Tony and could be slotted into a category more easily too.......
