Dang. For some reason, I thought he would outlive pretty much everyone. I thought he'd be around at least another decade.
I guess it's stating the obvious his importance and place and relevance in film history.

One of those titans of cinema I never really vibed with... but I've been meaning to rewatch Vivre Sa Vie since this year's its 60th anniversary.

RIP He was one of those guys I use as an example in Art - not just the movies - of appreciating something outside of your own tastes - the way a great musician can do that say - even if you are not a fan of the music they are playing - you appreciate the specific virtuoso, idiosyncratic qualities that they convey to the world - at least that much. I criticized Godard much more than I praised him when he was alive - but that's partially, maybe even mostly - the point. You can't imagine movies in the same way without him and to me Breathless and Vivre Sa Vie were 2 of the best films in one of the greatest eras which is itself a big deal. But not only that - he challenges (still) the very idea of how we "see" movies - not just then...but now too.....especially now - he'd loathe list culture, Film Twitter, GOAT lists of actors, anyone's "top 10 lists or Oscar predictions" and things that I would guess .....he was the opposite of "eager to please" .....he's one of the guys who invented Punk Rock - the mindset - and I don't give a bigger compliment than that.

As much as I couldn't stomach most of his movies, there was no denying his impact. And he went out on his own terms, it seems.
Go easy, monsieur.

One of not many moviemakers in the medium who could be genuinely classed as game changers. He had this decade (less than a decade, really) in which he established himself as one of the iconic directors that ever lived, and then spent half a century just... Being bold.
Today this planet just got a little bit less ostentatious. What a character. Farewell to one of the great artists of the 20th century.

I have my issues with Godard and the type of movies he often made, but it can't be overstated the effect this man had on the industry. RIP!

Loved some of his work (the 60s stuff), some of his stuff....well, I respected the hell out of the guy and we'll just leave it at that.

wow. his early films were so important to me when I was exploring cinema in my teens. I loved how he subverted cinematic conventions and truly just played with the medium. I've grown away from his filmmaking a bit in recent years but watching those movies in my teens helped establish my love for cinema, especially ones that break the rules and truly surprise.

R.I.P. to a true innovator. He wasn't my favorite filmmaker, but he legitimately changed cinema forever.

R.I.P, impossible to summarise his career in a few sentences. But he did changed the course of cinema forever.
Satyajit Ray on him:
I'd say, nowadays his 80s period don't get the recognition it deserves. Every Man for Himself is top 5 in his filmography for me.
