Ok, I'm gonna try something different - yet again - to elevate our political "discussions" (ha!) on MAR ..... people, you ain't D. Boon and it ain't 1984 ......... Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth? What do people think of this - and I'm stealing this from Jeff Wells board btw......... Good idea? Bad?
Could this work in 2022 in the US? What about some other countries - what happens where you live if you live outside the US cherry68?

In Italy, military or civil service was mandatory til 2008 if I don't remember badly. Nowadays, the technology about weapons is too advanced compared to few decades ago where soldiers had basically only to learn shooting with a mechanical rifle. That's why I think a professional army is much more useful for a nation. If we speak about civil service, again the way it worked in my country makes me think it was simply a way for some organisations to have people for low level jobs for free, not much of a development for the guys involved.
Switzerland works differently, all males have to do some weeks of military service every year for a couple decades and practice shooting every few months. Employers are obliged to allow your absence and pay your salary during service. If you don't want to do military service weeks you must pay a tax.
I'm not sure military / civil service can build the sense of a community, at least until they are conceived the way they've been til now.
