Such an interesting way to introduce herself to younger generations... The show is now such a huge part of her legacy, don't you think? Which of her performances was your personal favorite? Care to rank them? S1: Murder House, as Constance Langdon S2: Asylum, as Sister Jude S3: Coven, as Fiona Goode S4: Freak Show, as Elsa Mars

I gotta say I've never made it through a single episode of a Ryan Murphy production. I find his stuff impossible to watch. Like the tacky levels have my suspension of disbelief turned off to the point where I just press stop.

Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes are two of the worst things to have happened to American television.

She's fantastic in Murder House and Asylum (they're two of my favorite performances ever) and she's technically good in Coven, I just really hated that season. It was way too much "Real Housewives of Salem" with stupid bitchy drama, and her accent in Freak Show should have made her the headlining act of her own circus because of how horrendous it was. She was right to leave when she did; it's just a shame she left on that terrible note. Sarah Paulson should have left before her own over-saturation and descent into just painfully mediocre work. But the material is more to blame.

She's fine in Murder House, incredible in Asylum, fine but saddled with the most uninteresting character in Coven, and pretty rank in Freak Show.

Oh honeys, I loved her as Elsa Mars! Isn't there a Ryan Murphy Dietrich Lange project in the works? ''Jessica Lange and I are working on a piece about Marlene Dietrich in Vegas in the early ’60s. But I’m so booked. When am I going to do it? I don’t know. I’m only into April of next year’s calendar.'' - Ryan Murphy

Javi - Our Jessica Lange aficionado! What do you think? Lange in Asylum is probably my favorite perf of 2012... male or female, film or TV! She's amazing in the first season and a lot of fun in the third, too. Fourth, as others have said, was rough...

pacinoyes - Curious if you have a favorite season of "AHS"? A favorite Lange performance within the series? Asylum is like a Jessica Lange greatest hits performance - at several points if you watch the way she positions herself and her face she appears to be modeling Sister Jude as a work of Art like the sculpture we see.......she uses her voice in her weird way where she whispers lines and makes them almost indecipherable.......actors who whisper a lot do it almost always an actorly effect - but for Lange actually it's weirder and oddly spookier - she whispers in a way that she knows what she's saying but maybe doesn't want to communicate it outside of herself...... Various times her face is framed as in mime or kabuki another "trick" of hers and her background ........and of course she's the most sexually suggesive nun - Asylum is one of her best roles to me tbh......she has a lot of terrific scenes if you do a highlight reel from it and she gets to do everything in that season .......

So, I've already finished Murder House and I'm at about 1/4 of Asylum. Great stuff, so far. One thing I like about Ryan Murphy's productions is that they're never boring, and this is no exception. AHS might not be highly artistic or revolutionary, but it never fails to entertain. Also, the writing, the peculiarities of some characters and the performances make it hard not to like it.
You guys were right about Lange. She's excellent. There's something about her that makes her such a perfect fit for these scheming, despotic and wicked women. She has such a great, commanding screen presence, and the way how she uses her voice... I believe this had already been mentioned by someone, here or elsewhere (I think it was pacinoyes), she has such a great control of her voice and can use it so effectively in different tones to express such a multitude of emotions. Her Constance Langdon was the best thing about S1, and Sister Jude is another great character that Lange is rising to the iconic status (though I have to say, Lily Rabe is starting to steal the show in Asylum... I just love her character, and what she's doing with it. And James Cromwell might be doing his best ever work here). I'll post my thoughts after I've seen more.

I finished the fourth season eventually, and I also saw season 8's "Return to Murder House", which earned Lange an Emmy nomination as Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. My thoughts aren't much different from the ones already posted here, except I really liked Lange as Elsa Mars in season 4. The season itself is easily the worst of the 4 (Coven wasn't that great either, but it's much more tolerable than Freak Show, which can be too heavy-handed and hard to digest), but Lange made that character believable and compelling to watch. Even at her lowest point, she was never bad; that accent was weird at first, but after two or three episodes, I didn't even notice it. I liked her as Fiona in Coven, but I agree with stephen when he says that it might be the most uninteresting character; she does a very good job with what she's given, but she's not given much. She's great in her confrontation scene with Madison (before she kills her) and then, it's only in the last episode that she reaches those heights again. Most of the time, she seems to be just... there. I really liked her as Sister Jude, and I might agree that it's the richest and more layered of the four characters. She played her despotic side, her internal conflict and finally her descent into madness like perhaps no one could. It's a tour-de-force, and she's at the top of her game. I found myself, on several occasions, rewinding to see some of her scenes again. The season itself is also excellent, easily my favorite of the four, which might lead me to believe that psychological horror might be my favorite kind of horror (it was also the only season where I ever felt compelled to watch one episode right after the other). Lily Rabe started very promising in the first four episodes, and seemed to be on her way to become the season's MVP, but at some point, became increasingly stiff and uninteresting. James Cromwell was consistently great, very intimidating and even scary in his unpredictability, and he deserved every bit of that Emmy. And - it needs to be said - Sarah Paulson, who often does not get the credit she deserves (at least here) and whose character initially seemed to be going nowhere, became more and more vital to the story, and Paulson was nothing short of amazing in this season. Her scenes with Threadson in the asylum, especially the aversion therapy scene (which was incredibly hard to watch) and at his home, before she becomes his prisoner are among the best acted scenes of Asylum. I might also see Hotel, just out of curiosity, to see how Lady Gaga was, and then I'll stop. I suspect the other seasons just aren't on the level of the first four, and as much as I like the cast, I'm not keen on wasting my time with bad/forgettable TV. Unless any of you convinces me otherwise
