DRAMA LEAD ACTOR Jason Bateman – Ozark as Martin "Marty" Byrde (Netflix) Brian Cox – Succession as Logan Roy (HBO/HBO Max) Lee Jung-jae – Squid Game as Seong Gi-hun (Netflix) Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul as Jimmy McGill / Saul Goodman (AMC) Adam Scott – Severance as Mark Scout (Apple TV+) Jeremy Strong – Succession as Kendall Roy (HBO/HBO Max)
Previous winners were Josh O'Connor (2021), Jeremy Strong (2020), Billy Porter (2019), Matthew Rhys (2018) and Sterling K. Brown (2017).
The two front-runners here are Brian Cox and Lee Jung-jae. Gold Derby experts seem to be divided between those two.

I think it's between Lee and Strong, not Cox.

Conventional wisdom would say Strong. Lee's a very close second.
But Odenkirk has the sympathy card and his new season is airing right now.
Fuck it. Bob's owed.

Feels more likely that they'll hold off on Odenkirk till next year, particularly as Saul underperformed in a lot of spots. Probably between Strong and Lee, though I wouldn't count out Scott given the overabundance of love for Severance. Cox's better chance was last time. Ozark's ending response was fairly tepid... though that isn't a death knell with Emmys just ask Game of Thrones.

Bateman won Director for the show, though, and as good as he has always been, Linney and Garner usually suck up a lot of the oxygen in the room when talking about the show's acting. Odenkirk is already an Emmy winner for writing, but that was decades ago and I doubt most people know that.

Here is the update:
Vegas Odds: 1. Brian Cox +125 2. Lee Jung-jae +170 3. Jeremy Strong & Bob Odenkirk +400
Gold Derby Odds: 1. Jung-jae - 3.9 2. Cox - 4.0 3. Odenkirk & Strong - 5.0
Precursor awards: SAG, Critics Choice - Jung-jae (beat out Cox and Strong) Globes - Strong (beat out Cox and Jung-jae)
Looks like we have four contenders with Jung-jae, Strong, Cox and Odenkirk.

I'm shocked by the results of this poll.

I'm shocked by the results of this poll. Yeah, seems like wishful thinking.

At the Emmys, you either win for your first season or the last, unless the show of the person that kept winning over you has ended. So, it's either Strong or Lee. Odenkirk might win, but I doubt it.

How does that logic relate to Strong?? Well, he didn't win last year, but he did win last year his series was eligible in 2020.
