Hard to say, but the way Butler has blown up has been impressively quick. Chalamet is the last person who I was like "Wait, isn't that the dude I used to watch on that TV show??" (Homeland; Shannara Chronicles for Butler) and then suddenly they're getting A-list projects. Before that it was Bradley Cooper on Alias.
Ultimately I think Chalamet has had a bit of a head start. A likely Oscar nom for Elvis, an important part in Dune 2, that Masters of the Air show for Apple, a Nichols film with at least one good co-star (Comer), etc. is a good run, but Chalamet is completely established already. A good test will be "Can Butler steal roles Chalamet covets?"

Hopefully he can avoid the tempestuous temperament that cost Kilmer dearly in the prime of his career.

In the long run, Butler.

I give a credit for both. Chamalet for surviving Madonna as stepmother, and Butler to survive Vanessa Hudgens.
Well maybe Butler will return to Vanessa Hudgens arms, and just now they dumped because it was bad for his post Elvis career, having a highschool musical as a Hollywood date. And maybe in a couple of years, when the waters calm down will reunited.
Any way Vanessa and Lourdes are for their careers what is Jada for Will.-
Both need an intelligent woman to help in their careers, Di Caprio for example has his mom.- But usually a low profile girlfriend or a wife is what they need for their meteoric ascense.-
If Butler returns to Vanessa or someone like her. Chamalet will be the winner. Chamalet seems like a guy, who don't love anyone, except himself. So probably he will the bet.-

Haven't seen Elvis yet so I don't know anything about Butler but I do wonder if Chalamet peaked too early with CMBYN. He's worked with a number of auteurs and of course Dune was a big catch but nothing he's done since his debut has come close to matching the significance and complexity of that role, and if he doesn't land more roles like that I do wonder if he's going to start slowly slipping into obscurity. I feel like he's still riding a wave of goodwill from 2017. I guess we'll have to see what happens after Dune Part II.

He'll be fine.

I've been pondering about this. I think Butler has greater strengths in terms of technical shit; he'll sear his brain to get that accent or movement right. I don't know if he'll identify the hot shit directors as astutely as Chalamet, though. It may not be an issue if he wins the Oscar though, as it'll be like Leo winning for Gilbert Grape or something.

Revisiting this again. It's a good question. I've listened to more interviews with Butler, and he has a freakish level of preparation. I get why Denzel was impressed.

I don't like Chalamet but I can't stand Butler, so Chalamet it is.

I guess Chalamet will have the better career because he seems to be the latest middling talent that Hollywood has decided to give a neverending "push". Only seen Butler in Elvis but he's better in that than anything Chalamet has done by far.

I mean, Butler will have to do quiet a LOT to catch up to Chalamet (who has an incredible filmography in like, what, 5 years?)
They’re both in the same age group but I really don’t think Butler compares to Chalamet. He had one good performance that might’ve been a fluke… he’s been okay in the tv world but idk hasn’t done anything else remarkable despite having been working for a decade or so.

I think Chalamet will be considered the better actor and be more respected amongst cinephiles but Butler will have more mainstream appeal and will be able to successfully navigate between commercial and prestige films. I just can’t see Chalamet growing into a Departed type role the way DiCaprio did so strictly in terms of best career I think I give the edge to Butler.
