If you had to pick one actor (one male, one female) who was most representative of Generation X, who would your choices be? I have to go with Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder.

I think I'd go with Molly Ringwald for female... and maybe Matthew McConaughey for male? Despite born in the late 60s and around the same times Molly belongs to the 80s bratpack, and MM stardom started at the end of the 90s. So i guess Keanu and Winona. And then Christian Slater.- River Phoenix would be the king if he didn't died at 23 in 1993.- Hawke isnt the most interesting Gen X actor from the 90s. However he is the most iconic Gen X actor, after the 90s, after the Gen X.- All the Gen X actors are like Vampires, never age, Ethan Hawke is the f...ng King of vampires.-

By age Johnny and Brad Pitt are borderline, but cinematographically speaking both clearly are.- One thing is biological age, other totally different is cinematographical age.- Depp and Pitt stared as teenager or early 20s until their mid 30s.

pacinoyes - Can we call a truce on our "feud" long enough for you to weigh in here? Of course I'm an agreeable sort of fellow - I mean look at my Pepé Le Pew character in my sig and how chipper he is! - there's no one on MAR that I don't get along with .........and heck I love you buddy - and I can't even stand most everyone else here yanno? (just kidding MAR) - On the other hand we may start a new one because I'm not much of an Ethan Hawke fan overall (loved him in First, Reformed though) ........the first 2 that come to my mind are these 2 .......I know there are bigger male stars but he actually summed up that generation to me - in things like Drugsore Cowboy, Singles - and of course so did she. I think I just maybe interpret it different .........because I think of Gen X as outsiders / alternative inventors in a lot ways .....it's an oddball generation in a good way........ Would have been a defining couple I bet.......... I don't think they ever did anything ..........I assume they fit for ages as Gen X ....

Definitely Winona Ryder. She's the first one who comes to mind. Molly Ringwald's a good one too, but Winona carried the era farther.

I thought Ethan Hawke was the right choice until pacman reminded me Matt Dillon was in Singles, in a fucking grunge band with Pearl Jam. So yea Dillon is the only correct answer for male actors. And I’ll add another vote for Winona Ryder for the ladies

I guess Cruise and Ryder. No one's said Cruise yet but in those early roles he just seems like the prototypical 80's Gen X guy, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, and of course Top Gun.

My first thought was Ethan Hawke, because when I think Gen X I think Reality Bites (a movie I've admittedly never seen).

Maybe by age, but he seems more like an early 80s teen.-

hugobolso Actually Dillon is slightly old for a gen x (he was born in 1964), and I remember I saw him in the theater in 1982, Rumble fish.

Depends more of a what age they find stardom, that their actual age. So Depp and Pitt are actually Generation X, even when they are several months older, while Keanu Reeves who is just a couple of moths younger is a Gen X.- In Dillon case he played some boomers teen roles, lot of bratpack roles, and a couple of Gen X films as a guy in their 20s.- But when you see in Something about Mary, who looks much older than Cameron Diaz or Ben Stiller, who has the same age.- Cherry you are italian right? Who are the italian Gen X actors? I guess Mr. Kim Rossi Stuart, but I'm not sure.-

Maybe by age, but he seems more like an early 80s teen.-The early 80s teen is actually why I'd pick him tbh - technically by age he's maybe a year off - maybe - (born in '64 and it usually starts in '65, it varies). But by the time they get around to naming a generation - they've already missed it anyway - ever ask somebody if Nirvana's Nevermind was the "first" alternative album or the "last" one - the one that started everything .........or ended everything.......... that answer depends on your age (it was last btw) and generation. Gen X have a lot of the equivalent characteristics about being "in between" - the "boomers" and the "millenials" both of which are wayyyyyyyyyyyy more culturally defined than them - and that's in Dillon's roles .........a misunderstood generational film (Over the Edge), always the younger brother - not a child and not a man (Tex, Rumble Fish) - Rumble Fish in the shadow of his brother explicitly too.........and relationship with his dad another "not yet an adult" role (Flamingo Kid) .........Gen X is the first American Generation that never grew up tbh ........... Like I don't see Ethan Hawke being representative of Gen X at all - to me he just played Winona Ryder's boyfriend as a musician once in a movie that's not as good as Singles - but like I said ................it depends how you take the word "quintessential"

He's the most known abroad too.

He's the most known abroad too. Unfortunately I only know about Mr Favino work from the past 10 years. I have no idea what he makes during the late 80s to early 2000.- From Ornella Mutti to Cuccinotta/Bellucci, there were no famous italian household names. In fact most of Italian famous names were the ones that were already famous in the late 50s and early 60s. The Mastroiani or Gasman movies were realese here, until they passad away. then there are or were italian actors like Gian Carlo Gianini, Laura Antonelli o Mrs. Melato, that some were realese here depends on the success. Celentano movies were huge popular during the 80s year. Unfortunately since then very few italian movies were realese, usually the ones with Oscar Nominations or European Festival winners.- The people I know that could indentify as gen x are Mrs. Cuccinotta, Belluci, Rossi Stuart, Lo Verso, Marco Leonardi, Mezzogiorno, Bova, Francesca Neri and the Placido and Godfather daughter.- their films weren't realese because of them, just because another more famous name (director or actor) was involve, or were part of a a Hollywood movie.-

L'ultimo bacio, directed by Gabriele Muccino. There's a sequel too, Baciami ancora. I've seen it, of course was realese more because of the praise, box office, or Sandrelli was involve than for their lead actors.- Steffano Accorsi was the lead, I always confuse him with the guy from Farinelli.- Weird movie when I've seen, I was around 21 at the time, but then I've seen all the italian commedies from the 60s, and all ends exactly like that.- Ugo Tognozzi or Lando Buzzanca could made that in the late 60s or early 70s, with Gloria Guida, Ornella Mutti or Mrs Sandrelli as the teenage girl.-

I can't see him as a dramatic actor. Have you seen the sequel? Way more bitter.
