why only these six?
1. Easy Rider 2. Chinatown 3. Reds 4. Ironweed 5. A Few Good Men 6. Terms of Endearment
these are some of his best IMO barring Terms of Endearment which along with Prizzi's was his worst and most grating. Easy Rider and Chinatown are almost interchangeable and both amazing, but Easy Rider had a more emotionally engaged role and Nicholson had to do more with it. Reds will always be my favorite of his supporting performances.

Haven't seen Ironweed or most of Easy Rider.
1. A Few Good Men 2. Chinatown (wonderful film, but what exactly did Jack contribute to its greatness; you could have subbed in countless other people and had the film as good or better; it's not some Michael Corleone triumph)
Reds and Terms of Endearment (and Broadcast News) are both utterly forgettable quasi-cameos. His best performance is probably Five Easy Pieces. Jack's probably the most overrated movie star actor of all time to me.

I guess because I feel like I have a better sense of what people think about most of his other 6 nominated performances, and I was more curious about these in particular since I haven't really seen them discussed here as often (Chinatown for instance gets talked about frequently enough as a film in general of course, but I don't recall seeing a lot discussion on this board about his performance in it specifically).

1. Chinatown. Legendary, iconic work. Would not have made a bad winner (even though I still think the Academy made the right call picking Art Carney in a Hackman-less field). 2. Easy Rider. A dynamic barnstormer of a breakout performance. Wish he'd been able to work more with Hopper. 3. Reds. Nice, subdued work, and I do wish this had been his early '80s supporting actor win instead. 4. A Few Good Men. Recently rewatched this and even though I do still wish Stephen Lang had been able to reprise his role from the stage, Jack just brings such a fantastic energy and the courtroom scene is a mainstay for a reason. 5. Terms of Endearment. It's just Jack playing Jack, and while that's not altogether a bad thing, he doesn't really do much for me in this film. 6. Ironweed. This is an outright awful movie and both he and Streep are career-level bad in it.

Performances:
1. Chinatown 2. Ironweed 3. Easy Rider - I guess - he has 1 scene really .........but it's a great scene
4. Reds - ok, fine 5. Terms of Endearment - ok, fine 6. A Few Good Men - This is actually the one he didn't deserve a nod for at all - a lot of guys could have got in in '92, I'm pretty sure Stephen Lang who did it on stage would have been far scarier......I mean he's not bad.......but don't really get it tbh
Tbh the reason he can legit be called the GOAT - along with DePac and Brando is because of things like Ironweed - everybody says he didn't stretch - no theater, no Shakespeare, blah, blah, blah .........but the truth is every time he absolutely HAD to stretch he pulled it off - Ironweed, The Passenger, About Schmidt, The Pledge, Prizzi's Honor (I know, people hate it, whatever), King of Marvin Gardens.......he didn't stretch a lot........but he didn't fail at stretching either.
Now of course that doesn't mean he always delivered - I don't think he's a very good Hoffa after the early scenes fwiw - either but the reason he has 12 nods......... is everytime people were sick of him - and about to write him off (if they hadn't already) - he pulled a rabbit out of his ass and ingratiated himself to the sweaty unwashed masses / critical comminity all over again......
