Incredible for Top Gun: Maverick. This is the best drop a 100m + live-action opener has ever had.

Wow.I knew it would do well, but I honestly didn't anticipate it doing this well.

Wow. If the Academy ignores Top Gun and Everything Everything, they might as well go back to five nominees.

In all seriousness I hope this shows Hollywood that the quality of the film actually matters. They can still make plenty of money by releasing a piece of crap that will open big, but if they actually give these big action movies an emotional center (plus actually good action instead of a bunch of green screens) people will want to see them again and they'll make even more money. And the film cost sub 200 mil. too which isn't much by today's blockbuster standards so it's not like they needed a 250+ budget to make it good.

Over-under on an honorary Oscar for Tom Cruise before the decade's out?

Over-under on an honorary Oscar for Tom Cruise before the decade's out? I'm really interested to see if this happens, if he's still too much of a controversial figure within the industry of if he's amassed enough goodwill at this point to completely counteract that. At this point, I'm guessing the latter, and they'll probably give it to him sooner than later. Maybe after the Dead Reckonings release, especially if they're gonna be the grand finale for Ethan Hunt. (Additionally, I think it'd be really cool if, like Paul Newman, he won a competitive Oscar right after they give him an honorary Oscar, if he decides to pivot back into those sorts of roles in his older years.)

Over-under on an honorary Oscar for Tom Cruise before the decade's out? I've been thinking exactly THIS since I saw the movie last week. It's TIME. The man is benefitting the whole industry and has already left a string of GREAT movies and GREAT performances like decades ago. He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone anymore. Recognize him, cowards!

I'm sure that if it were announced that he were going to be feted with an honorary Oscar some people would dredge up some dirt on him and obviously his association with Scientology, but the guy's been Teflon on that score and he's coming off a massive win at the box office. Hell, I think in the wake of Slapgate, the Academy giving Cruise an honorary Oscar might actually get people buzzing about the ceremony that year, even though they don't broadcast honorary prizes anymore. Hell, they may do a special occasion where they show highlights from the Governor's Awards as a way of saying "Oh yeah, we heard you guys criticizing us for ignoring this in the broadcast, so here's what you missed." Cruise just got an honorary Palme and the reaction was pretty rapturous (among those who care about that sort of thing; obviously an Oscar is a much bigger deal). I think it's a very strong likelihood at this stage. (And yes, I'd love for him to get Newman'd, although hopefully not at the expense of a Hoskins.)

That's the biggest second weekend gross since Endgame if I'm not wrong. Absolutely insane run. $500 million US final is pretty much guaranteed now, might even hit $1 billion worldwide
