The easy one for me was Ben Affleck for Argo. Also the two tech nods Return of the King missed that I’m still pretty confused about (cinematography and sound mixing). I remember thinking District 9 was the favorite to win makeup before it was snubbed. I think it’s pretty clear We Don’t Talk About Bruno would probably win this year if Disney made the right call.
Not quite the same but I think that Winslet would have won for either performance in 2008 (or maybe even both if they put The Reader in supporting)
Any others? Maybe some docs, foreign or animated films?

A pretty obvious one to me - Gordon Willis for Godfather 1 and more likely 2.

Not a sure thing, but Amy Adams for Arrival seems like a good bet. Career best notices from virtually everyone, well respected veteran who had been nominated several times before in a movie that was loved by every other branch of the Academy. I think so.

Glenn Close for Reversal of Fortune. Strong reviews, the film was nominated in three main categories, and it would have been her sixth nomination (in eight years). I know she was snubbed by all awards groups that year but with the right campaign she probably would have won. Goldberg wasn't unstoppable.

Why would she win when Stone pretty much swept that season? I mean, Adams was nominaed everywhere else and didn't win anything so I don't think she would've suddenly swept that Oscar up had she been nominated.

Since I just watched it a few days ago, I'm compelled to mention Hoop Dreams in the Documentary category.

I have a memory of the Oscars website posting Return of the King for Sound Mixing and I've always wondered if that actually happened or if I just miscounted. But for like a week I was telling all my friends it got 12 Oscar nominations and corrected my youth pastor when he said it was 11 lmao. Whoops.
Did the cinematography snub have anything to do with them all being shot at the same time? I feel like I have seen that argument posed before, can't remember if it was actually an insane rule they had or just speculative. Two Towers didn't get nominated either. Maybe it was just a sentiment within the branch that he'd won it for Fellowship so he just didn't need more lol but that certainly didn't apply to the other branches.

Yes, Stone, Huppert and Portman won a lot more awards than she did.

Whoopi Goldberg was a very popular win - she won the Globe and BAFTA (this was pre SAG, BFCA). Ghost was a big box office hit and a Best Picture nominee.

That’s what I thought at first but they included cinematography in their FYC ads so they at least believed it was eligible. Maybe the branch viewed it as one work though and therefore thought it was already awarded.

I feel like if either Won't You Be My Neighbor? or Three Identical Strangers had been nominated in Documentary, they would've won.

Joanna Scanlan this year. I think if she had been nominated, she would win. I find it a little hard to believe, a bit too "European" for the lack of a better word to win over the Academy. I honestly would put money down that she would've lost the BAFTA had any of her competition there been Oscar nominated.

The lack of Oscar nominees gave BAFTA the opportunity to go for the hometown girl (and justifiably so; Scanlan smokes all the competition this year across the board), but even if she had gotten the nomination, I think it would've been too small a film for her to overcome bigger names in her category. Olivia Colman at least had a huge film on her side when she won.

Hm... Maybe Carrie Fisher could have won Adapted Screenplay for Postcards from the Edge?

Parallel Mothers got a second Oscar nomination, it's directed by a hugely popular international director, and Penelope Cruz herself is an Oscar-winning A-lister. If it had been Spain's submission for International Feature, it's probable it would've gotten in there as well. Joanna Scanlan is a very respected actress in Britain, and After Love did very well over there, but there are not remotely comparable films in terms of the established pedigree and studio support.
