He's in the headlines now for his messy divorce proceedings with Alice Evans (they met while working on 102 Dalmatians), but I recently watched the beautiful Oscar-nominated Welsh film Solomon & Gaenor, and it reminded me of how much I enjoy him as an actor. He's been on my radar ever since seeing him as Pip in my favorite adaptation of Great Expectations (co-starring Charlotte Rampling as Miss Havisham). He also played Horatio Hornblower in the well-received series (i haven't watched - do you all recommend?), but I suppose he's best known for the original Fantastic Four with Jessica Alba? Apparently he's best mates with Matthew Rhys, as well... Anyway, please, share your thoughts?

Really good as Horatio Hornblower and he's usually pretty solid in everything he's in.

He's fine. Solid, stage school trained British actor that also gets pretty far on his looks. There are a couple of dozen actors out there at his precise level. I'd put him in the same category of Luke Evans and Matthew Goode (though Goode is a stronger actor than both of them).
Good actor. Nothing remarkable or a generational talent, but not everyone can be. For the industry to move along at a regular pace, you need meat and potatoes leading men like him and Henry Cavill (who is also stage school trained, but also less talented than anyone mentioned, including Gruffud).
Josh Duhamel is the American equivalent to these guys.

I feel similar to stephen, and do wonder if there’s truth to Alice Eve’s claims that her rejecting Harvey Weinstein not only her career, but Gruffudd’s as well. Sure the second Fantastic Four didn’t do that well I believe, but still for someone that was in the first one that was a hit and in Horatio Hornblower which I believe was also a success, I would have thought the Industry would be more forgiving because he is white.

Weinstein couldn't affect the career of someone like Gruffud much, like he could with women. Like you said, he was white. He was also a handsome leading man type. There were loads of studios, directors and producers that would have taken a shot at turning him into the next big superstar leading man, regardless of if Weinstein liked him or not. Fantastic Four just didn't impress people much, and the sequel even less. No one left those movies thinking "wow, Ioan Gruffud is a superstar in the making". He was comfortably outshined by Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans in those movies from an acting standpoint. It's a competitive industry, and as I said, there are dozens of guys out there at his level as an actor, and just as good looking or better looking. If you don't pop with those early Hollywood projects, it's really easy for the industry to move on to the next thing.

I will say that while I agree the man probably wasn't "movie star levels of success", and I can't exactly feel too sorry too for an actor who's still working, I do find it a bit curious that his post Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer roles were so relatively anonymous. His next major role after Rise of Silver Surfer, was Sanctum that forgotten James Cameron produced exploration 3D flick, and then San Andreas, where he's playing the jerkass boyfriend. I do wonder if he ran across a bad producer, and or our maybe the major leading roles just dried up incredibly fast. I'm always curious about those actors who have their fifteen minutes of fame, and then you wonder what happened to them next?! Only so many opportunities for performers out there.

Really decent actor, should be a much bigger star than he is.I'm fascinated by his divorce drama, his wife has really gone off the deep end.I feel terrible for his kids.

Alice Evans is completely unhinged and needs help ASAP. Also, some of the comments in this thread are incredibly baffling to me. It's not like he was ever a huge star - his looks and his whiteness didn't seem to help him too much... I can't help but think he would have had a more successful career if he had stayed in the UK rather than moving to Hollywood in the early 00s. I mean, besides Fantastic Four, everything he's "known" for he made while living there.

I wonder if he looks at Jamie Dornan's current career trajectory and seethes.
Do you think his name hindered his career at all? Maybe he should have anglicized it...

I think he was pretty talented when he was young, he was great for example in his small role in the Fortsyht Saga, and he was a much better Horation Hornblower than Russell Crowe. so one of the things I hated of Master and Commander, is that is Crowe and not Grufford in the leading role.-
I guess he is more talented and gives more depth to the roles than Matthew Goode, Jamie Dorman or Henry Cavill just not as handsome or attractive as them.-
what happened I dont know, after The fantastic 4, where he was pretty solid (I don't think he was outshine, maybe for Evans, but for the wrong reasons, because at the time Evans was consider a very bland actor, and in the fantastic 4 he was the revelation), he made christian christmans films and one season series.-
Kind of the same happened to Jim Caviziel, Eric Bana or Ben Chaplin.-
No idea about her marriage or scandals.-

pupdurcs - I didn't want to completely derail the Bad Boys 4 thread, so I thought I'd reply to you here! I can't imagine he'd see returning to television as a failure - British actors have always fluctuated between film and television, and now every American A-Lister is headlining a miniseries. I agree that he would be endlessly employable in the UK, in the same vein as Rupert Graves, Iain Glen, Richard E. Grant, David Tennant, or Samuel West. As a matter of fact, when he returned to British television in 2017 with the ITV miniseries Liar (opposite Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggat), it was a huge hit. I know he thought real Hollywood stardom was coming off the back of Fantastic Four, but it simply never materialized. That being said... the Bad Boys 4 job was a cushiony one... he was paid well over 6 figures for a few weeks' worth of work (his messy divorce/custody battle has made these figures public). I'm not sure that British television pays that well? Oh, and I'd love to see him do stage work! He is classically, RADA-trained, after all.
