Are you familiar with his scholarship? When I was in college, I truly enjoyed his programs on the Tudors and the Churchills, though I certainly never agreed with his politics as presented on various programs broadcast in the UK. He is now disgraced and has lost his position at Cambridge after saying last year on an online show that slavery was not genocide as "so many damn blacks" had survived... He's now begun his own YouTube channel and is a frequent guest on the UK-Fox News equivalent, GBN News - he's definitely leaned into his mean-spirited and old-fashioned persona in order to appeal to the Brexit base, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find him entertaining. Share your thoughts?

And? Oh. Anywho, never even heard of this guy. As for great British historians it’s Gibbon or bust

Oh honey, I haven't heard of him (love his chair) but my thoughts are people should be able to express whatever opinion they like. Debate is all about people contesting things. Choice is all about people forming and holding their own opinions.
I really hate this cancel culture. Who's to say what should be cancelled?
Imagine if I cancelled Nicole [Can I do that? Is that possible? Who should I speak to?]

I will watch Starkey's Youtube channel to see how (if?) he can "explain" (or retract?) his "not a genocide" argument - I mean to this day people argue about the "genocide" of the Armenians, after all......... Barack Obama didn't (wouldn't) use that term ......what label could we affix to him - A racist? A hypocrit? A mere political pragmatist?
Just saying, this is a slippery and complicated slope - and Starkey is a historian not a US President.....but also any institution has the right to fire him for ANY reason......so.....if he has a point to make, perhaps, like Jordan Peterson did, it's in a format that he controls himself.....
The famous video below - the "it is NOT about creating an intellectual space" (video below) - is chilling stuff ......in the US anyway...I don't know about the UK........but often college campuses are anti-intellectual and anti-free speech atm........and also in the US at least foolish enablers of really shitty alternative Rock bands (kidding / not really kidding).....

pacinoyes - In this instance, the reason he was "canceled" wasn't because he said slavery was not a genocide - it's because he said "so many damn blacks" survived. Here you can get a flavor for his persona - he was once called the "rudest man in Britain":

pacinoyes - In this instance, the reason he was "canceled" wasn't because he said slavery was not a genocide - it's because he said "so many damn blacks" survived. Here you can get a flavor for his persona - he was once called the "rudest man in Britain": Well, he's quite the character isn't he? I think - giving him the benefit of the doubt - he may be one of those people whose mind works too fast for his mouth in that clip there's several instances of him repeating himself to stress his point ........and several annoying personality / speaking quirks too (saying "I'm sorry" repeatedly) and also saying tacking "or whatever" to the end......... maybe "so many damn blacks" was incredibly poorly phrased ........at best. Youtube monologues might be for the best with a person like that - I'm not sure "debates" or group discussions fit him because he's definitely prickly and gets OTT if challenged where he is almost self-parodying. This way he can be edited and choose his words carefully - maybe structure would help........on the other hand people like that tend to seek out debates (they are on movie message board too, um ) so it will be interesting to see if he invites people on his channel with him or does it alone. At one point I thought he was going to throw that glass of wine or whatever he was drinking on that red-headed young lady while he was babbling on and on about "having emails!"

I checked out his biography of the early years of Elizabeth I called Elizabeth: The Struggle for the Throne (yes, I was primarily motivated to do so because of Starz's Becoming Elizabeth ). It's an absorbing read.

Quite the Pop Cultural media darling (I guess?) isn't he? Rarely do you see historians draw eqivalencies to the Kardashians and what not His Youtube channel must be doing well (see the OP)?......... Or maybe not......seems part historian, part stand-up comedian ....
