Pretty meh for Antlers. Should open with around 4m, so basically on point. Dune will probably repeat this weekend, even with a massive drop.

Fairly weak for both of the new openers, on the plus side that's a fairly decent drop for Dune. About 60%, which would make it on the higher-end of second weekend drops for HBO Max releases.

Yikes at Soho's opening. Can't blame that one on same day streaming.

Damn, Soho was extremely frontloaded. All things considered, that is a fine drop for Dune.

That's extremely disappointing for Soho.I know the reviews weren't spectacular, but they were decent enough and given that Edgar Wright directed it and the new It girl Anya is in it,it should've done better than that.

This could be one of those times where the people declaring her the "It" girl is just a small section of people. This movie bombing should be studied because I can't believe it did this poorly especially during Halloween. I'm not even sure what happened here.

It was no small section of people.

Edgar Wright just isn't a draw yet. Baby Driver did well, but it had a starrier cast and an action movie premise. If Ridley Scott with Damon and Affleck can open to like $5m with pretty good reviews, Edgar Wright with a mixed reception had no chance.

Everyone has Netflix, so lots of people tuning in for Squid Game or Stranger Things or You or The Queen's Gambit or 13 Reasons Why, doesn't mean they're actively invested in the careers of the people associated with such projects. The test is always "Will they go to the theater and spend $20?". With stuff like The Witch, Emma, etc. Anya is clearly not a major star yet. She has star qualities, but something has to hit, like Dune sort of just did for Chalamet.

Plenty of people can be stars, it's just that they're stars on more of a specific streaming / couch watch scale. Very few actors push some people out to the theaters, and those that do tend to be of the older variety, of which Taylor Joy is obviously not.

Apparently, Dune isn't even really a big hit and the numbers and 2nd week drops worldwide would not come anywhere near guaranteeing a sequel in pre-pandemic times. But there is a lot of investment in promoting it as a hugely successful blockbuster. PR is an interesting racket.

People got carried away with Anya Taylor-Joy's starpower because of The Queens Gambit, just like they got carried away with Jodie Comer's starpower due to Killing Eve. Being in a big/popular TV show does not automatically translate to you being a movie star or someone people will pay to watch. Taylor-Joy clearly isn't there yet. She'll keep being pushed though, and something like the Furiosa prequel may be the big hit the industry will need to justify her push.

The numbers aren't great per-say, though a 62% second weekend drop isn't terrible for a Max-release, but it's doing rather really well-overseas especially when compared to Blade Runner 2049, which is why WB probably considers it to be a success. I'm more curious if it can make 100m, the frontloadnesses already feels like it's in effect.

Dune clearly would have done pretty well by conventional metrics pre-pandemic with no simultaneous streaming release. Opening weekend it grossed like 15 mill less than a Daniel Craig Bond movie (the past two of which were B.O. juggernauts) that wasn't streaming, right?

Pre-pandemic, I think Dune would have done Mad Max: Fury Road numbers at worst.

Given that HBO Max viewership was around 2 million or more, I can see Dune end up in the $60-70 million ballpark on opening weekend in normal times. Lifetime gross, probably around $205 million. The demand was clearly there for it that it wouldn't become another bomb like Blade Runner 2049 and actually be a solid hit like Fury Road.
