On the other hand I would have loved it if Mann did the Winter of Frankie Machine and Scorsese Public Enemies...

Awesome. Pitt is attached to that Chazelle project (supposedly), but I don't know when that's expected to start.

Why are we discussing all these white men being in a film about Native Americans? I think DiCaprio/De Niro is quite enough.

I think they misquoted Scorsese in that headline, unless he was alluding to his age.

The way I see it, he just meant he doesn't know which film will be his last one, because, you know... he's old....

I've been thinking about this film a lot and it has the potential to be what Gangs of New York aimed for... but ultimately missed.
1. The pairing of DiCaprio and De Niro - obviously DDL was amazing in Gangs but De Niro was the original choice and we all want to see these two men in a Scorsese film. 2. A more mature DiCaprio - Leo felt miscast and lightweight in Gangs. It felt like he was trying to be a Serious Actor in a Serious Film but he overdoes it, in my opinion. Obviously he'd been great in films before Gangs but he's since matured enough to carry off this sort of weightier material more convincingly. 3. American history - both films reflect the emerging, modern America. Gangs demonstrates how crime and politics were interwoven from the start, while Flower Moon appears to be about the confluence of crime, oil and the eradication of native Americans. Both films are about greed, money, murder and corruption in the quest for power. Very Scorsese! 4. The Western - Scorsese has talked a lot about his love of Westerns (especially John Ford) and has described Gangs as a sort of Western of the East - an "Eastern" if you will. Killer Moon is another non-traditional stab at this genre, with Dante Ferretti on set design duties once again.
Tonally, I expect Scorsese will weave some of the contemplative, "what's it all for anyway?" vibe from Silence/The Irishman into this and I can't wait!

But apart from that, Scorsese making a western is something I've always been expecting.Him directing Bobby and Leo is another!! As for the other points, I'm not sure De Niro would deliver as the Butcher. DDL gave a very physical performance, which De Niro wouldn't do in his 60s. At least not in such an extent.

De Niro would've definitely delivered a different (and great) Bill the Butcher but my point was more about the fact that the original intention was for him and Leo to be the leads, which has taken 20 years to happen! Along with all the other factors, Killers of the Flower Moon represents a chance to make a truly great film dealing with similar-ish material. Gangs has some great elements but cumulatively is weak.

I certainly expect Flower Moon to be great but I can't be objective about Gangs. I love the movie and consider it one of Scorsese's best in the last 20 years.

I certainly expect Flower Moon to be great but I can't be objective about Gangs. I love the movie and consider it one of Scorsese's best in the last 20 years. I haven't watched Gangs in years but I remember thinking it felt very "staged" and "acted", especially the use of language from the era coming from the mouths of Cameron Diaz and Leo, who were such stars of modern pop culture at the time. It just felt incongruous and took me out of the movie. The other thing I remember is how I was much more interested in the story between The Priest and Bill the Butcher, rather than the traditional revenge story of Amsterdam. It just felt boring and predictable, plus there was no way I could accept Leo as some sort of hardened street urchin. I've always felt he's much better suited to Catch Me If You Can/Wolf of Wall Street/Gatsby/Aviator style roles than the tougher roles like Gangs and The Departed. He was believable in The Revenant though, which I don't think he would've been 20 years ago.
